Deltona, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. It has been postulated that the name "Deltona" derives from the Spanish word "deltabo," meaning to trade goods or travelers on horseback through the area. In 1892, a group of businessmen and citizens decided to change the name of their community to Deltona after Daytona Beach in Florida. The first settlers arrived in early 1800s and by 1818 there were five families living in what is now Deltona. By 1827 there were 10 families and six businesses had been established in what is now Deltona. A post office was established at Deltona on March 2, 1830 with Elisha Higginbotham as its first mayor. In 1834 four new families moved into the community and it grew rapidly with an increase in population to 26 by 1840. In 1846 three more families moved into town and by 1850 there were 30 people living in what is now Deltona. In 1886 George Waddell started a gristmill which became one of Duval County's leading flour mills producing feed for horses and cattle until it closed its doors in 1951 due to bankruptcy. The milling industry declined throughout much of Duval County during this time but some important buildings remain such as the old courthouse (now used as a library) across from Higginbotham Park which still stands today; also prominent are two cotton ginneries - one built about 1870 and still standing, operated by J H Rankin & Sons; both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; these sites testify toDuval County's significance during this time period when agriculture was key to economic development within the county overall. In 1907 Jacksonville built its first beachfront hotel/casino - then called Atlantis - adjacent to Higginbotham Park which soon became known as Jacksonville Beach because it separates Duval County from Nassau County].
