Deltona is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. Deltona's history dates back to 1892 when it was known as "Titusville". In 1903, the name changed to "Deltona" after a small town in Georgia. In 1969, Deltona became an incorporated city and changed its name again to "Miami-Dade County" on February 14, 2002. The original mayor of Miami-Dade County was his namesake, Don Shanks. The area around today's Deltona was first inhabited by Native Americans: the Aisnekes were here before Europeans arrived in what is now Miami-Dade County; they hunted and collected shellfish during the summer months and traded with local tribes for goods such as maize, cattle and guns. By 1800, settlers had founded two towns along the bayous: Titusville on Thursday Island (now part of Biscayne Bay) and Delray Beach on Sunday Harbor (now within Everglades National Park). Both towns were established by Englishmen who came ashore from their ship "Eagle" in 1802 looking for new land to settle after completing their survey of Florida land that year. By 1810 there were 10 buildings in Titusville and only 3 in Delray Beach; both towns declined until about 1830 when white pioneers began moving into eastern Dixie seeking rich soil for cotton plantations. Thereafter these villages grew rapidly with waves of immigrants arriving each decade until 1840 when all but one village had been lost due to Seminole Indian Wars fighting between Creek Indians allied with Spain against American forces backed by Britain. In 1846 Ulysses S Grant named a township after himself – Grant Township – located east of present day downtown Miami while he served as United States Secretary of War under President James K Polk;[1] later renamed Fort Myers Municipal Airport.[2] When Grant died childless less than two years later his unfinished project – creating an airport near modern day Coral Gables – became official Ulysses S Grant Land Rush Airport,[3][4][5] also called Northwest Key Largo Airport until it reverted back to its original name following Hurricane Wilma on December 6, 1995 which damaged most aircraft runways at this airport including Runway 9L/27R which required substantial repairs three years later prior to reopening September 2nd 1999[6].
