Deltona (formerly Daytona Beach) is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Land O'Lakes metropolitan area. Deltona became a city on October 1, 1984. The community of Daytona Beach was founded in 1868 by Englishmen John Churchill and George Brownlow as a small town on the now-demolished Intracoastal Waterway between Daytona Beach and Jacksonville. The first white person to arrive in what is now Deltona was James Ewing who established A & H Insurance Company with his brother-in-law Prentice Eldredge in 1869. In 1870, Ewing married Anna Latta, daughter of Capt. John Fenton of Fort Pierce, who had come overland from New York City that year as part of the Union Army during the American Civil War era and also explored this coast before returning to England two years later. Anna Latta's father had purchased 160 acres (70 ha) near today's intersection of US Highways 1A and 4A about three miles east of where Daytona Boulevard runs today; it would eventually become known as Anna Latta Park after her death in 1923 when it was donated to the city by her son Prentiss Latta Jr., one of its founders In 1899 – just prior toulla’s election as Mayor – Judge Augustus Cushing laid out what would become downtown Deltona on parcels acquired from Mrs. Mabel Farnsworth for $1 per acre (0·78 ha). This site - bounded by Second Street on the south side; Fourth Street on the north side; Church Avenue on East Side - would soon be occupied by several stores and businesses including: J W Marriott hotel built 1912; First National Bank building built 1915 (the old First National Bank building still stands); Gussie’s Grocery store built 1922; Belmont Cafe/ candy store built 1926 In 1925 – less than two years after he took office as mayor – Augustus Cushing died suddenly while walking across Central Park West in Miami Gardens at age 50 after dining at Belmont Cafe with friends following SouthFlorida World Fair days festivities . His widow continued to manage these businesses until her death in 1942 . In 1945 when war ended all property within city limits reverted back to their original owners .. By 1961 there were only four retail shops remaining open downtown.. One vacant storefront remained until 1969 when an evergreen nursery opened called “Tree Top Nursery” which served local residents until it closed down due to economic troubles .. But even during these difficult times downtown business continued steadily with several new restaurants opening up including Joe’s Crab Shack Opened 1974 followed by Speedway restaurant opened 1978 then Zinfandel wine bar started serving wine instead ...................Downtown development accelerated rapidly beginning around 1980 when developer/owner Reginald Denny constructed several high-rise buildings including River Walk Towers I tower completed 1985 followed by II tower completed 1987 both located along current day Orange Blossom Trail .........By 1990 many businesses had closed or been replaced by larger chains such as Sears Roebuck& Co.; JCPenney;; Macy's Inc.; Blockbuster Video etc.........As Deltona began experiencing growth throughout late 1990s & 2000s many unique properties such as USS Constitution Museum & Marina Complex were added........................Today Downtown has over 30 independently owned and operated businesses ......The central business district contains six blocks incorporating more than 100 retailers plus numerous services housed inside various brick and glass buildings dating back more than 40 years ...........One key aspect that has kept Downtown thriving since its early days are its lengthy laneways filled withncertain typesof bookstore,,cafeteria,,bar,,lounge etc............Many restaurants have changed hands multiple times through recent decades but some constants have included Ruby Tuesday's since 1975 .......................Post offices remain active both nationally & internationally serving mail for individuals (& their families)......Formerly known simply as "The Post" throughout most of its history The paper mill complex which encompassed 300 acres (120 ha) waterfront property bordered Orange Blossom Trail & comprised several dozen blocks northward starting at Third Street ......Whichever way you drive into town looking towardsalleyside you will see signficant development taking place ......Olympus Arena complex - home ice for certain NHL teams also includes Philips Arena(formerly State Farm arena), which seats up to 20,000 ..........Ibid ...p 6
