Deltona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach metropolitan area. Deltona was founded on June 25, 1907 by developer and citrus grower Harry Fenton. The first post office in Deltona opened on October 1, 1907. In 1957, the town incorporated as a village and changed its name to DeLand afterland Plantation in Palm Beach County, Florida. On January 1, 1959, the village changed its name again to Deltona after Hurricane Charley destroyed much of Gainesville and surrounding areas in what is now Duval County. The City of Daytona Beach annexed parts of Deltona on November 6th 1959 which made it an official city within Daytona Beach boundaries; however both towns continued to operate as separate villages until 1963 when they were merged into one municipality under the same government structure with all citizens sharing one municipal government and economy. In 1971 residents voted to change their government back to their original form as two separate villages once again with each having its own council but with shared elections for mayor and other municipal officials between the two villages- this time lasting six years before ending due to lack of voter turnout resultant from unification efforts by both cities combined- subsequently reverting back to their separate council form which remains in place today. The name "Deltona" comes from Englishman John Denton who settled here in 1804 and later served as a justice of the peace and postmaster for this area.
