Deltona is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,004 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Deltona" is derived from the Seminole word "Daltona" meaning place of abundant fruit trees. The first settler in what would become Deltona was James Wofford who founded a cabin on an island in 1821. In 1824, Colonel Benjamin Butler purchased land adjacent to present-day Deltona and named it Butlerstown after himself and his friend, General Andrew Jackson Butler. In 1828 John Kirby built a sawmill on Buffalo Bayou and named it Kirbyville in honor of General Butler's father-in-law, Colonel James Kirby. In 1875, Fenton Cushman developed a tract of land which he named Cushman Park after himself and Congressman Augustus Ewing (the son of Senator Augustus Ewing). The first post office opened at Cushman Park on November 1st, 1876. In 1906 the town officially changed its name to Deltona when it became one of four towns consolidated into Jacksonville by act of Congress — along with Fort Myers (Florida), St Petersburg (FL), and Port Arthur (TX) — as part of the New Deal program known as the Americanization Project. The 20th century brought many significant changes to Deltona; its economy diversified with Manufacturing becoming dominant; education increased with both private and public schools available; its infrastructure improved through completion of major arterial streets such as US 11/19th Street SW and US 301/19th Street SE; new annexations were made to provide more services including fire protection; parks were created including Northwest Park near downtown while Central Park was enlarged eastward to include portions now within City limits; population growth resulted from annexation by other municipalities not only within Duval County but also Brevard County outside Jacksonville proper
