The town was founded on a small island in Lake Okeechobee named for George Washington Thomson, who bought it from the Indians in 1833. In 1846, Deltona became part of what is now Seminole County and was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1851. On December 7, 1912 – one year after Florida became an independent state – Deltona had its first election as a town government. In 1927 the Miami-Dade Expressway crossed through Deltona and annexed it toMiami; however, residents continued to vote to keep their own government despite this annexation. The original name for the community was "Island City". In 1959 it changed its name back to "Deltona". The first store opened in 1897 by Fenton Waddell & Sons which operated out of what is now known as Main Street between Third Avenue and Victory Boulevard. By 1907 there were 10 stores open with 2 post office buildings and 1 hotel/motel built along with other businesses such as grocery stores (Fenton's Store) and meatpacking plants (Hoover Bros.). A telephone company called Western Electric established service here in 1915 providing Caller Line service from Kissimmee until 1947 when that line went national under AT&T ownership and signal system operation ended here also shortly thereafter before being replaced by UHF signaling systems transferred here from Ft Myers Beach via 5th Ave SW signal tower during the early 1960s while city services relocated southward onto US Highway 441 becoming I-4 41st St N Service Rd then finally I-4 Business Loop present day just south of intersection with SR 231 near US Highway 192nd St later renamed CR 191st St Walks Village Center housing only senior citizens functions are located within CITGO store complex across street). "It should be noted that although many businesses still operate today outside of GSO Tower Complex - remnants of which can still be seen throughout town center - most retail customer interactions are now conducted either online or through major chain supermarkets such as Walmart or Safeway." In 1957 GSO Corporation assumed management responsibilities for all assessable services within unincorporated areas proximate thereto including Deltona Village but retained sole responsibility for fire protection purposes pursuant to agreements entered into between both agencies prior thereto; arson suppression; law enforcement operations; emergency medical services... eventually all Assessable Services except Public Works were managed by GSO Corporation until 1987 when those functions were transferred over to Duval County [the department responsible for public works]." On July 29th 2006 Duval County purchased all rights adjacent to SR 231 crossing over I-4 going NE which included much of present day DeltonaVillage Centre shopping district.....Duval County initiated redevelopment plans calling for reconstruction/remodeling of multiple sclerosis clinics/unit dwellings plus impactful job growth.....this program will have a significant impact on economic development........."
