The allure of this growth led to what has been called "the most reversed growth trend" in Duval County history: The median household income increased from $41,783 in 1990 to $79,450 in 2000 while the population decreased from 4,521 to 3,869; however it has since begun increasing again with an annual average increase of 1%. In spite of these positive trends there have also been some problems associated with rapid development such as traffic congestion caused by high volumes of tourists that can lead to social ostracism for residents who do not wish to conform; displacement of local businesses due to increases in industry or annexation by other towns; crime; water shortages resulting from overpumping for agricultural use; and environmental degradation which includes loss of wetlands and coral reefs
