In 1870 Captured General Andrew Jackson's brigade stopped at Clearwater while encamped near Tallahassee during their march northward across Florida after winning Battle of Horseshoe Bend; General Jackson himself stayed one night at Crossings Point prior to his departure on July 4th for Pensacola! This event helped start the era of commercial development along Clearwater Blvd., which continues to this day! The only businesses remaining in town were a general store and two logging companies that operated sawmills until they closed in the early 1970s due to lack of customers or competition from other towns with more developed economies.
