Prior to its closure in 1984 due to economic conditions withinDuval County Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation built one of Duval County's first shopping malls - The Mall at Bayfront Park - which remains an important commercial center for the city today with anchor stores including Macy's Department Store and Sears Holdings department store chain. In addition to its role as a major research center for aviation industry development during the early 21st century; Deltona also became home to several colleges & universities including Stetson University; USF Lakeland School of Law; Saline Community College & Gulfstream Business Institute; among others. Deltona is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 36,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Deltona was originally populated by the Timucua people and later by Seminoles. In 1821, Captain John Stevens founded Fort Brooke on what is now Fort Myers Boulevard in present-day Deltona. In 1824, Spain ceded Florida to the United States as part of their Treaty of Paris following the Mexican War; this gave U.S. citizens free passage over Spanish territory into Florida without paying tribute or taxes. As a result of this treaty, many Americans located along what is now US-1F between Tampa and Jacksonville were granted land grants from the government in order to settle them down and make them economically viable for American settlement. This early development led to the nickname "The Road To Tallahassee" because so much of it took place on unpaved roads leading from Tampa to Jacksonville and then inland to Gainesville (now University Park). As early as 1835, plans were being made for a railroad through central Florida linking Tampa with Jacksonville and St Augustine/ Melbourne (then called Miami). However, due to political differences between President James K. Polk's Democratic Party and George Washingtons Republican Party over states' rights issues, construction did not begin until after Polk's re-election in November 1850 as president due to low engineering rates offered by railroads at that time compared to other industries such as cotton plantations or timber production across Alabama/ Mississippi Territory which had already been built out pursuant to previous treaties with Spain and Mexico City respectively! By1856 when Railroad Commissioner David Dudley issued his report recommending that rails be laid through our centerland instead of going eastward towards St Augustine we knew what was coming our way & began making financial preparations…….. Delaware Bayou becoming known as Darlington River In 1886 when Phillip Murray bought 1/3 interest in The Panama Canal Company he decided on building an irrigation canal connecting Darlington Bayou near modern day Sarasota with Lake Okeechobee via Kissimmee Creek – one mile wide at its widest point! The completion of this project allowed for agriculture north of Interstate 495 while also providing transportation necessary for citrus processing southward along I-495
Deltona was founded in 1867 by General P.G.T. Beauregard and his family as a small community on the banks of the St Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. The town grew quickly, becoming an important center for cotton plantations and shipping operations along the river. In 1902, Deltona became a city and remained so until 1974 when it merged with Jacksonville to form Jacksonville-St Augustine County.
