The name "Delray Beach" comes from "Dalrymple beach", which was first settled by Englishman James Dalrymple in 1795. He named his estate after his friends, Sir William Dalrymple and Lord Baltimore, who were two British noblemen who had come to America to help settle it as a new country. In 1835, General John Custers led an American Expedition against Seminole Indians in what is now known as the Battle of Fort Pierce; Custer's group lost 10 men while seeking revenge on the Tribe for killing one of his comrades two years earlier. Aftermath led to development around this location with salt water being piped in from Biscayne Bay so that white people could stay healthy and avoid malaria during their many social gatherings at Fort Pierce (now part of downtown Miami). In 1892, Mayor Abram Weisman designated Delray Beach Boulevard as the town's main business district extending from SR 805 north to SR 904 east along Wellesley Road. By 1920, over 1,000 businesses had been established within walking distance of both Miramar Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue (now US 1). As more homes were built near oceanfront resorts such as Coral Gables or Lighthouse Point developments began nearby including Coconut Grove neighborhood today’s Little Havana neighborhood then just blocks away), much attention turned towards developing restaurants on Shore Drive between 5th avenue Nallahusa Street SW and 4th avenue NE - later becoming known as “Del Ray” The early 1900s saw an increase in international visitors coming through Key West/St Augustine because they could now swim directly past Torie Island without having to go through St Augustine Harbor - only accessible by going down Holland River navigation channel which was also used for fishing at that time During World War II USS Ponce sailed into Biscayne Bay off Key West to drop supplies onto troops fighting ashore One major attraction here during those days was Pompano Racetrack which still exists today Although most operations stopped during the war due mainly to lack of manpower; some businesses did continue such as Brown's bar where live music still persists post-war until present day
