Delray Beach is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida on the Atlantic coast. The population was 21,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The name "Delray Beach" is derived from "delta amaranthe," meaning "shore of the marigolds." Delray Beach was platted in 1903 by two brothers, Harry and Willard Barron; it was named for their father's estate on Amaranthe Island. The first store in Delray Beach opened its doors in 1905 and remained open until 1970. In that time period, the town had only one grocery store and six restaurants. By 1959, when Delray Beach became a city, it had 12 stores and 170 businesses. Today, there are 24 stores and over 1,500 businesses in Delray Beach alone. One of the earliest communities to form outside of Palm Beach County was Sunrise Village which developed along what is now US-1 south of I-95 between Sunrise Boulevard and Pompano Drive in 1922. This community consolidated with nearby Paradise Valley after both were platted around 1924 by Harry Willsworth who also founded Willsworth Farms dating back to 1894 near present day WPXI-TV transmitter site north of Longboat Key High School - then known as KBXL (Channel 8). In 1948 development began on Sunrise Villages east off US 1A just south of I-95 exit 10/Everest Road about 3 miles due east of where today’s Sunrise Shopping Center occupies an undeveloped tract across from Hawk’s Nest Golf Course off US OneB) . The village started with 20 homes but grew to over 100 within 5 years including many new structures such as a church (1927), library (1929), post office(1930), swimming pool (1932) & tennis court (1945). These developments were financed byHarry Willsworth Jr., founder & CEO at Willsworth Farms Incorporated who leased land from state government for this purpose as well as through his majority ownership interests therein until his death in 1955 . At its peak there were 400 residents living cheekbyjowl with various agricultural producers , service providers , local business owners ...... etc ....... typical early annexation issues led to some conflict ..... eg: school desegregation ..... enforced through eminent domain ..... but overall positive experience resulted thru cooperation between all participants .........ULTIMATE LOCATION.........Sunrise Village

Delray Beach is a small town located in the state of Florida, just south of Miami. The population was estimated at 15,000 in 2000, but has since decreased to 10,000. The area that now makes up Delray Beach was once part of the St. Johns River Indian Nation and had a population of over 100 people. It is possible that the first Europeans to set foot on the shores of what is now Delray Beach were Spanish missionaries in 1665. A treaty between Spain and the Native Americans resulted in land being divided along the St. Johns River between them and St. Augustine Island became part of Delray Beach while also becoming a parish within Spanish Fort Indiana Territory. settlement began around 1790 when British sailors who had been exploring south Florida discovered sugarcane growing on an isolated island near today’s North Key Biscayne Boulevard and decided to establish plantations there for their own consumption rather than sell it to traders onshore. By 1800, about 50 English families lived on or near present-day DelRAY BEACH with about 100 slaves working off shore cargo ships captained by local white men making Negroes work as Beasts Of burden for no pay! In 1821 Englishman John Ligon bought 1/4 acre (0·30 ha) from trader Thomas Barclay for £2 sterling [$3 per head]… He named it after himself – “Ligon’s Key” – because he owned all or most of it." The town's namesake may have come from early settler John Ligon who bought 1/4 acre (0·30 ha) from trader Thomas Barclay for £2 sterling [$3 per head] in 1821; however this would be his only purchase until 1898 when he donated 5 acres (20 ha) eastward extending into what is now known as Northeast delray beach established modern day lighthouse complex including wharf house, steamboat landing dock, marine patrol boat basin and parade ground surrounded by deep water berths for luxury steamboats anchored offshore which still operate today during summer months
Delray Beach was first settled in 1839 by Capt. Augustus Kelley and his family. The town was named for the beach on which it was located, Delray Creek. In 1861, the area became part of Fort Pierce after the Union victory at Bull Run Bridge. The post office opened in 1865, and in 1869, a lighthouse was built to help guide ships to and from Lake Okeechobee. The town experienced growth during World War II as facilities were created for Naval Base Miami and Tampa Bay Naval Air Station. Today, Delray Beach is home to both of Florida's largest universities - University of West Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University - as well as many businesses and residences.
