Delray Beach, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Delray Beach was first settled by Germans and Jews from what is now East Germany in the late 1800s. In 1912, the Spanish bought land in what is now Delray Beach and named it Navesa after one of their own who had been born there. By 1920, most of what is today Delray Beach had been developed as a resort town with casinos and hotels for vacationers. However, during World War II much of the area came under Japanese control as part of the Pacific theater and many residents were interned or taken into slavery on Bataan Peninsula. After the war ended most people returned to their homes but some kept working at resorts until they could retire there permanently. In 1962, then- Mayor Manuel Diaz proposed renaming Delray Beach to honor former President John F Kennedy because he felt that "the city should be associated with somebody who has made such an impact on our community". A referendum authorized the name change but only went ahead if 50% of voters approved it - which they did not do due to opposition from nearby Palm Beach County which opposed any nickname changes that might make its county more attractive to visitors (although Broward County eventually adopted JFK's original name). Despite this vote against renameation, Kennedy's namesake still lives on locally in various forms including a park next to US1 north of downtown and a statue outside City Hall (now known as City Hall Park). The first casino opened in Delray Beach in 1961 called Tropicana de la Luz and became one of South Florida's largest gaming operations before closing down around 1990. Today there are several small casinos operating within walking distance of each other along US1 throughout central Miami-Dade County while also providing entertainment options such as live music events at two venues - Hard Rock Live Resort & Casino near Little Havana and AmericanAirlines Arena which can seat up to 20,000 people per event featuring both concert tours and professional wrestling matches among other events annually. In addition to gambling activities there are also numerous retail shops available selling everything related to tropical vacations including food products such as chips amd guacamole; drinks such as teas; dietary supplements; clothing items; souvenirs; dancehall performances (including internationally televised shows like Big Boy Lollipop); charter buses for tourists visiting all areas south FL; golf courses close by including St Andrews Golf Course just minutes away from Downtown Delray beach or Playdome Country Club nestled amongst palm trees about 15 minutes away from Downtown Miami

Lauderdale–The Waldorf-Astoria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Delray Beach was founded on August 15, 1917 by developer Harry A. Ziegler and his wife Nellie Ziegler as an exclusive white gay beach community on Biscayne Bay; it became open to all residents in 1951.[1] The first vacation home built in Delray Beach was the "Beach House", which was built by Harry Ziegler and his brother Julius in 1922 and became one of the premier homes for wealthy American expatriates living in SouthFlorida during the 1920s and 1930s. The original name of Delray Beach may have been derived from Englishwoman Dorcas Beale's term "East Indian Isle" because of its location on Biscayne Bay between Key West and Fort Lauderdale. Beale had named her estate after her then loves Frank Pendergast (1873-1941), son ofSenator Arturo Pendergast (D-Fla.),[2][3] husband of actress Marie Dresser (1896-1975). After many years as a struggling small town with a population under 1,000 people,[4] Delray Beach recorded its first growth spurt when it annexed neighboring unincorporated communities—Laguna Hills Village(now Laguna Hills), Miramar Highlands,[5] Boynton Beach, Davie Lakes[6], Sunrise Isles[7], Seal Island Park[8], Crystal Coast Estates[9][10])—on December 3, 1951 resulting in a total population increase from 24 to 31 thousand over just six months! In 1954, with its annexation by mainland Miami,[11],[12]), El Portal Playa Club Resort opened their doors to the public which quickly became one of America's most popular/enchanted resort communities hosting more social events than any other place! By 1960, when it rejoined mainland Miami as part of North Kendall,[13],[14], there were over fifty thousand residents living within five miles of downtown Miami! In 1965 – following passage through Congress – legislation was passed designating Delray Beach as an International Airport due to its growing popularity among airplane passengers seeking sun baked beacheside airfare or charter flights out to nearby Palm Springs or Palm Harbor; currently international arrivals are handled by both MIA Intl Airport & Hollywood International Airport [15]. After declining passenger traffic during the 1970s due largely to economic recession throughout much of southern Florida – primarily affecting centers such as St Petersburg and Clearwater – management began focus group testing various airport improvements designed to revive travel habits; these included developing new passenger terminals adjacent to both MIA & HIA airports making room for larger planes etc.; this ultimately led to construction beginning on October 15th 1978 completing Phase One including two large paved runways that now accommodate up to Airbus A380′s each! Phase Two saw expansion additional hangars/facilities at MIA airport providing space for ever growing aircraft types while still accommodating today’s largest jets like Boeing 787 Dreamliners!] In early 2006 development finally commenced on Phase Three which includes Interstate 5widening adjacent highways creating what will become one Of America’s most convenient areas for shopping destinations such as Douglas Children’s Museum & Dolphinarium right next door along I-95 corridor……..As you drive into town center watch for giant “Welcome To Delray Beach” signs…..Phase Three should be complete by Fall 2016″
