Deerfield Beach, Florida is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 3,836 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Highway 1 south of Palm Beach and east of West Palm beach. The townsite was first settled in 1892 by Dutch immigrants who named it “Nieuwpoort” (New Port). In 1893-1894, Deerfield Beach residents built a sawmill to supply lumber for the sugar plantations in South Florida. A post office was established in 1895 and remained in operation until 1956. In 1916, the name of the town changed to “Deerfield Beach” after Samuel Prentice Deerfield purchased 2,000 acres (10 km²) of land from John Davenport for $1 million dollars ($40 million today). The land included several miles (16 km²) of beachfront property that stretched into both Broward and Palm Beach counties. In 1947-1948, Deerfield Beach became home to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport when it opened as part of the new airport system that was developed by then-Mayor Artemus Keyes and Governor Tom Lawton. The airport had been planned since 1945 when Keyes first proposed building an airbase near downtown Fort Lauderdale as part of plans to develop the region around it into one large city with hotels and shopping malls across three counties. By 1948, keyed up by development profits from his airports projects and aided by state Senator Harry Reidy (DFL), Keyes persuaded Congress to appropriate $1 million for construction of two runways parallel to US 1 at Deerfield Beach – what would eventually become T4/US 1 at I-95 exits 191B/192A northbound and K2/K3 southbound – making it one of only four American airports outside New York City which could be self-supporting throughitation alone without government subsidy during those years; other airports were New York City's JFK Airport (LAM), Miami's runway 12( asphalt ), Washington National's Dulles Airport (IATA: DCAF),and Toronto's Pearson International Airport (IATA: YYZ).
