Deerfield Beach is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Deerfield Beach is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the north and east, Interstate 95 to the south and west, and Coconut Creek to the northwest. The city's ZIP code is 33118. The first Europeans to visit Deerfield Beach were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and Pedro Menendez de Avila in 1565. Captain John Smith landed on this location on December 12, 1718 while exploring what would become Florida for Spain during his second trip through Southeast America as captain of HMS "Platinum". Smith named the bay after General James Overstreet who fought with Spanish forces at Ybor City against American forces led by Colonel William Smallwood in 1778. The first permanent settler in Deerfield Beach was George Hinton who arrived with his family from Massachusetts in 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now Fourth Street near North Avenue. In 1835 Hinton married Amelia Safford and they moved into their current home which they purchased from Mrs. Gadsden in 1857 after her death when he was only 31 years old; she had been married to Captains John D'Estaing and Nicolas Caron Jr.. They raised six children: George Hinton III (1856-1925), Amelia Safford (1858-1932), John D'Estaing (1860-1945), Nicholas Caron Jr.(1862-1938), Florence Emerson Safford (1864-1941) and Douglas MacArthur II(1900-1964). After her death he married Marion Copley but their marriage ended two years later because of differences over custody of their five children: Randolph Churchill(1920-.2007), Alonge Winston Churchill( 1922-.2006), Ethel Maud ("Teddy") Roosevelt( 1923-, 1946-)and Elliott Roosevelt( 1924-.2012). A post office called Deerfield Beach was established at its present site on May 1, 1849, under a grant from President James Ketchum Sr.. The name change came about because early settlers found deer running through the streets so they called it "DeerFIELD BEACH" instead of "Beach". On July 2nd 1860 hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Fort Myers so much damage had been done that oceanographers decided that an outlet must be located for alligator eggs being sent downriver from Cuba via Key West so Fort Myers became an important shipping center with items such as fishing gear moving up river rather than having to go all the way around Tampa Bay to get them

Deerfield Beach is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. Deerfield Beach is located on Biscayne Bay and has a rich history dating back to 1894 when developers agreed to donate land for a public beachfront park after Hurricane Andrew wrecked nearby Miami. The city was founded in 1912 as Deerfield Terrace and changed its name to Deerfield Beach in 1931 due to the popularity of that year's "Beach Babe" – actress Norma Shearer – who vacationed there with her husband, Field Marshal Douglas MacArthur. The first hotel in Deerfield Beach was built by Capt. Julius Levy and his wife Lillie on Pompano Boulevard in 1912 as the Levy Hotel. In 1915 Captain Julius Levy donated land on Biscayne Boulevard for what would become known as Parkland Manor which later became Broward Parkade (later Dolphin Stadium). A pier was built along Biscayne Boulevard just north of where it currently stands for loading and unloading ships during World War II. In 1932, King George V granted permission for an amusement park called Kings Dominion to be established in DeLand with money from his British Empire tourney winnings which had been invested in American stocks during his stay in America. On October 20, 1934, the first roller coaster opened at Kings Dominion called "The Beast". The park continued to grow with new rides being added such as: "Cirque du Freak" (1935), "Gauntlet" (1937), "Swingtime" (1939), and "Dolphin Reef" (1940). In 1941, Kings Dominion became Worlds Fair International when it merged with Universal Studios Florida making it one of the largest theme parks ever built. In 1954-55 Atlantic City casino magnate James Eastman donated $50 million dollars towards developing an amusement park adjacent to Interstate 95 called Atlantis; however this project never materialized because Eastman died before he could finalize the donation contract or build any infrastructure including a casino tower or transportation connections between South Florida and Atlantis! In 1957-58 developer Harry Jaffe purchased 1 million acres near Fort Myers beachline complete with alligator ponds and wetlands which he named Jaffe Swamp after himself; Jaffe also developed another amusement park near Fort Myers called Great Gulf - both parks were eventually closed down bylaw enforcement because their admission prices were too high for regular citizens! In 1971 developer Marvin Karpin purchased 1 million acres east of Fort Myers called Twin Lakes from citrus farmer Don Poindexter resulting in the development of deerfield beaches now neighboring Karpin's property! Karpin renamed his newly acquired property Deerfields Club before selling it to developer Bob Dollinger who developed one phase of deerfield beaches into Cocoa Beach while keeping much of acreage within Karpin's boundaries! Dollinger then sold most of Cocoa Beach district headquarters & facilities including many restaurants & nightlife businesses along Euclid Avenue southward into Daytona Beach where they continue operating today as Candlelight Social Clubs!
