Deerfield Beach is a community located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 7,886 at the 2000 census. It is part of the South Dade neighborhood. The area now known as Deerfield Beach was first settled by Africans on Plantation Key in 1795. George Washington leased the land from the owners for £200 per annum and allowed African slaves to work it for free. By 1810, white Americans had built homes on the property and began selling water rights to the black populace. In 1827, Brickell Avenue was named after John Brickell, an American banker who had helped finance construction of Fort Lauderdale's first courthouse and library. In 1868, a group of Englishmen bought 4oth Avenue from J. Parnell Bowen for $2,500 dollars plus interest; this became known as "Brickell Boulevard." They laid out streets and developed what is now Deerfield Beach into one of Miami's most popular communities with wide avenues full of trees and well-maintained streetscape typical of English town centers such as Bath Fields in London or Highgate in England. Two years later (1870) Elisha Cuthbert organized a Baptist church on NW 2nd Street which quickly became one of Miami's premier churches due to its large congregation and fine preaching capabilities by its minister AIME HUGHES Sr.. The3333 block East 3rd Street house where President Grover Cleveland lived during his presidency also served as a Methodist church from 1865 until its demolition in 1915/16 In 1901 SamIun James moved into this home which he renamed "The White House" after he became U S Senator from Florida In 1914/15 Orange Park resident Johnnie Cochran donated this home to Miami-Dade County for use as county office headquarters

On January 1, 1912, it became a town and adopted its present name after George Fenton Deerfield (1859-1929), one of the founders and first trustees of The University of Florida. In 1947, deer were introduced to Sanford and began to be used for hunting purposes in nearby unincorporated areas which allowed deer populations to grow unchecked until controlled hunting opened up elsewhere in Palm Beach County during the early 1960s when hunting licenses became available through county government departments instead of just individual landownerships On October 17th 1946 Deerfield beach officially became a town
