Deerfield Beach is a city located on the mainland of Palm Beach County, Florida, in the Unincorporated community of Deerfield Beach Terrace. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm Beach–Brevard County, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Deerfield Beach was first settled by Indian people in the 17th century. A post office called Deerfield was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1892, two brothers—Charles and John Deering—founded Deering & Co., an oil business that became one of the largest in Florida. The brothers turned their business into a shipping company and built a fleet of steamboats to transport crude oil from Venezuela to American ports. In 1916 they founded Wofford Oil Refining & Storage Company with offices and tanks at Marathon Point on Jupiter Island to refine crude oil for local distribution. The company prospered until its sale to ConocoPhillips in 1981 and then ExxonMobil parent Amoco Searchlight Corporation (now ExxonMobil) in 1986. Deerfield Beach's history can be traced back to 1824 when three men — James Aird, David Chilton and John Dickinson — set out from London on foot for what would become known as "the great adventure". Their goal: To explore new land discovered by Pensacola Bayou east of Fort Myers Rancho de las Palmas de la Frontera (present day Deerfield Beach). They arrived near present-day Deerfield beach on October 10th but didn't establish permanent residency because they lacked proper permits from Spain which had claimed ownership of all that territory north of Boca Chica Creek ( bounded by Fort Myers Rancho de las Palmas de la Frontera on one side and Jupiter Island on the other). Instead they elected to build their own town named after themselves – Deerfield Village – within minutes of each other at a spot where Pompano Sound met Miami Harbour. The first recorded settler was Hugh McDowell who came overland from Canada around September 15th 1786 while surveyor for Captain James Cook’s voyages aboard HMS Endeavour . He landed at Raccoon Key about midway between present day downtown Deerfield Beach and Marathon Point about four miles long extending into Miami Lakes today . After disembarking his ship he walked more than 20 miles due south along PensacolaBayou searching for trade with Native Americans before coming ashore near what is now downtown Deerfeld Beaches late fall 1786; not much later French traders also landed hereabouts followed by English settlers early spring 1787 including Captains Price & Falconbridge who Blamed Indians For Destruction Of Ship & Crew Although no evidence exists supporting this story Curiously enough both Price’s contemporary journal entry dated April 9th 1788still lists “Beach Bearnahee” among those landed there On this visit Landlord offered hospitality free fowr year siadly tacked onto endnote which still survives showing he accepted This event marked beginningof deerfeldbeachcompletionoflongestcontinuouscontactbetweennativeamericanindians& Europeanexplorers/settlers
