Deerfield Beach, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 41,393 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The history of Deerfield Beach goes back to 1892 when Jacksonville businessman and cattleman George Halsey bought 160 acres of swampy land in what is now Deerfield Beach from the Seminole Tribe. He named his new development "Halsey's Landing" after himself and built a home on the property. In 1902, Halsey sold his land to citrus farmer John A. Southerland for $1 million dollars. Southerland built a large citrus orchard that continues to this day and produce over 1 million pounds of oranges per year. He also developed several other businesses in Deerfield Beach including an insurance company and a boat dealership which still operate today. In 1955, entrepreneur Jack Dempsey decided to move his wrestling business from Jacksonville to Deerfield Beach after purchasing 8,000 acres (3 km2) of swampy land north of town on Biscayne Bayou where he would build anplexia Stadium and call it "The Hurricane". The stadium would serve as both a training ground for future professional wrestlers and also be used for local events such as track meetups and carnivals. After years of debate over whether or not to build the stadium, Dempsey finally convinced city officials to allow him to build it using eminent domain power under the condition that he sell tickets directly to fans rather than through promoters who negotiated with Ticketmaster Incorporated (TMT). This allowed Dempsey's stadium project - one of many economic revitalization initiatives launched by Mayor Alex Fernandez -to come about without any public subsidies or tax breaks. A mainstay at The Hurricane until its closure in 2002 was Dempsey's restaurant called The Gilded Cage which served up original American-ized Japanese cuisine along with Margaritas made from real Leche de Vaca rum while wearing extravagant costumes complete with golden sandals . From 1984 through 2002, Dempsey also starred in a reality show that aired on Fox titled "The Jack Dempseyshow". As one half owner/star of the show, Dempsey enjoyed exclusive access to all aspects of Showbiz life - including live shows inside and outside his arena; private flights into/out of Miami; Championships within WWE; pleasure trips around South America; numerous appearances on talk shows throughout North America; etc.. In addition to his regular television appearances, he also conducted hundreds of interviews during those years living tweetable life behind closed doors backstage at 'The Gilded Cage'.
