The first permanent residents of Deerfield Beach, Florida were the Creek Indians. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans who hunted deer and other game. In 1821, a group of Englishmen settler named James Cook traveled to this location and discovered an island in the bay which they named "Island in the Bay." Cook sold land on this island to John Thornton for $1,000. A year later, Thornton built a cabin on the island and started to trade with local merchants. In 1824, he married Mary Witcher and moved his family to Deerfield Beach. In 1828, Captain Lewis Carver visited Deerfield Beach and used it as a landing place for his ships when he explored through Gulf Coast region of North America. He exploration led him to naming this area "Carver's Harbor" after Captains Lewis Carver and John Czarney who had explored this area previous. In 1830, George Stephenson built a mill on the beach which became one of the largest mills in Florida at that time. The first store opened in1831 here by Jno Pemberton from Liverpool England with produce from Canada . In 1835-36, John Fenton set up a tannery on the beach which became one ofFenton's most successful businesses . By 1850 there were more than 100 tanneries operating in South Florida In 1865 during Reconstruction period much business stopped because cotton prices went up
