In 1836, DeSoto's army invaded Florida and discovered what would become Deerfield Beach while raiding Fort Moultrie on Stono Island for treasure. General John Taylor decided to put Fort Moultrie into military use as an arsenal instead of being used as a garrison town like Jacksonville had been and renamed the fort "Moultrie" after General Taylor himself in 1837. In 1845, Major James Hennepin built two homes at present-day Pioneer Avenue and Third Street for his family after purchasing land from Captain Israel Putnam at Fourth Street and Warrior Avenue near where today's Harbour Drive meets Dolphin Boulevard (the original harbour). He donated all his land south of Third Street to establish what became known as Hennepin Heights Parkland adjacent to Daytona International Speedway south of Indian River Boulevard (now State Road 704). A year later he married Anna Maria Wise with whom he had six children: James L., Julia C., Clara P., Mary E., Franklin D., and Anna Maria J.. His wife died in 1853; he remarried three years later to Susanna Eaton but she also died soon before their final wedding anniversary – which occurred on October 20th, 1860 – making him widower again for the third time when Susanna Fenton married developer John Waddell who founded Waddell & Son real estate Company in 1861 The early years were difficult for deer owners living along Third Street as many close by farms sold out during those days when new development was just beginning around hereabouts….. But things changed about 1880 when someone bought these properties east of Second Street bordered by Old Dock Road then called North Indian River Boulevard…. After that some farmers got together with others who wanted something done about this noise they said came down from town often late at night where ever deer might be grazing or playing…. So somebody organized this group formed known as “The Defenders” against hunters because if you killed one your neighbors could do the same thing next door….. Eventually this group got so powerful that various laws were passed specifically designed against deer hunting……."

However, following years of hard work from Mayor Harry Weigel and City Councilmembers John Baez and Bernard Kerrigan, deerfield beach quickly emerged as one of South Florida’s most vibrant cities – home to both large businesses and thousands of residents who enjoyed easy access to cultural attractions such as SeaWorld Orlando and Walt Disney World Resort.
