The rest of Deerfield Beach was created from land that had been given to John Denton by his brother-in-law, Sam Hagan in 1871 and later sold to other developers. In 1915, Deerfield Beach became one of several towns within Miami-Dade County when it was organized as an incorporated municipality with its own government and police force separate from those of Miami-Dade County proper. At first, deerfllbe residents voted only for local officials; however, this changed after voters approved a referendum asking county commissioners to ratify the incorporation ordinance. Deerfield Beach experienced some growth during World War II as both the city and county grew rapidly with wartime demand for housing and employment opportunities (the county contributed $10 million toward construction of Veterans Administration hospitals). However, rapid postwar suburbanization soon led to declines in population throughout Broward County – including Deerfield Beach – as families moved out into newer neighborhoods or away from South Florida altogether due to high real estate prices and lack of job prospects inland compared to what they found along Ft Walton Boulevard in Miami or anywhere else close by on Longboat Key or Palm Beaches. However, over time overall occupancy rates have increasing again thanks largely to Operation Homefront which has brought many jobs back into town through contracts with companies such as FedEx Ground and US Airways International Airport since 2002 (see also: downtown redevelopment). In recent years there has been significant discussion about whether or not deerfeldbe should become an unincorporated community similar unto neighboring Coral Springs which has long enjoyed tax breaks but no mayor/council power nor street governance like that enjoyed by most municipalities within Broward County; however support remains strong among many residents for keeping their vibrant downtown core while also receiving all the benefits associated with being an incorporated municipality - including special rights related to zoning ordinances etc., which may eventually be granted retroactively if development trends continue apace elsewhere within Broward County despite opposition voiced by some who feel unincorporated status would provide less economic & political clout vis-à-vis larger jurisdictions).
