Debary is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name of the town may be derived from Spanish "dobar", meaning "to carry". The first settlers in Debary were Indian moccasin traders who came down the St. Johns River in 1795 and 1796. They named their settlement after brother-in-law Manuel de la Vega y Osorio, 7th Baron de Debary, who had come to Florida two years earlier as brigadier general of volunteer troops against Spain on an unsuccessful attempt to conquer Cuba. In 1802 Captain John Fenton built a wharf on the St. Johns River and started shipping goods to Havana and other Caribbean ports; he became one of the most important merchants in Duval County. In 1822 Captain Jens Jensen bought land at what is now downtown Debary from James Lawler for $10 per acre (1/4 Native American dollar). He began building a sawmill and gristmill on his new property which he named Fort Jones after himself and George Washington Jones (1784–1859), both Ulysses S. Grant's favorite General during the Mexican–American War (1847–48). In 1827 Jensen sold his interest in Fort Jones to Acker Crouch for $2,500 cash plus 10 acres of land south of where it now stands for $6 an acre ($ today). This transaction marked the beginning of what would become Debary's Main Street development that spanned more than half a century before its current incarnation as First Avenue between State Road 944 (now Hwy 21) and Interstate 95A/Pinellas Park Drive NE just east of Old Town square (north side lot #5). In 1829 Captains Jens Jensen and Peder Rasmussen began shipping saltwater fish from Tampa Bay through what is now Jacksonville into Miami harbor; they called their venture "Jensen Brothers' Fishpacking Company." The company grew rapidly under Captains Rasmussen's leadership until it was purchased by Acker Crouch in 1865; it continued operations as Acker & Sons Fish Packers until 1956 when it merged with Gulfport Canning Company to form Gulfport Canning Incorporated. By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Debary; by 1880 there were 350 citizens total including 125 males over 25 years old who formed a Masonic Lodge No. 3 while still living within their home communities which they helped manage through mutual aid societies such as First National Bank, Methodist Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church etc.; this system was eventually replaced by central government regulation following passage of state constitutional amendment creatingDuval County effective November 1st 1860 with Mayor David Levy elected officeholders instead thereof By 1920 there were 513 residents including 318 males over 25 years old who composed nearly 60%of all voting registered citizens making them effectively self-governing municipalities although not directly represented within county government due to recent annexation into Pinellas Park Township .
