Debary is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Debary" comes from an Indian word meaning "place of refuge." In 1819 Spanish traders founded the town on a bluff overlooking the mouth of Cogue Creek. After American independence and the Treaty of Paris ceded Florida to Spain in 1821, Debary became part of Seminole Nation under Chief Osceola. In 1828 Captain John Stroud named it for General James Wilkinson who had recently led British forces into Florida during the Seminole War. A post office was established at Debary in 1830 and remained in operation until 1905. In 1865 US Senator Prentice Morton laid out a townsite south of present-day downtown Debary on land that he had purchased from Native Americans near what is now US 1 (State Road 5). Morton named his new city after his friend and mentor James Wilkinson who had fought with him during the Seminole Wars. By 1870, over 10% of all citrus production in Monroe County was done within three miles (5 km) of this new city center where farmers could sell their products direct to consumers without going through local processors or wholesalers. The first store opened in downtown Debary in1871 by J M Higginbotham & Son along with other small businesses soon followed including grocery stores, wagon shows, blacksmiths and several hotels which were also popular tourist destinations for visitors seeking peaceful country living away from urban bustle and distractions like shows and carnivals located nearby at Jacksonville Landing on Petit Courthouse Square today known as Jacksons Landing State Park . The town was named for Debary, Massachusetts, where Fenton had been born in 1792. In 1860, Debary became the county seat of Flagler County and remained so until 1935 when Oviedo became the county seat.
