Debary is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1909 by two brothers, John and Orville Debary. The first post office opened in 1910 and the first store opened in 1912. In 1915, the Debaries erected a school house which served as their home from then until 1928 when they moved to an adjacent lot. In 1919, John Debary donated land to build churches on both sides of State Road 706 (now US 1). The current churches were built between 1924 and 1931; one is still standing and dedicated in 1932 to Dearest Mother Mary of God (Catherine McAlester), founder of Our Lady of Lourdes Basilica Shrine in Fort Lauderdale; and another was built between 1951 and 1955 for St. Patrick's Catholic Church located at 6335 Main Street. In 1926, the town hall was Constructed with Federal funds through National Rural Housing Administration administered by FHA program under President Calvin Coolidge's New Deal initiative . It became known as "the best building that ever came into this little corner" because it met all requirements set forth including having concrete walls 8 feet thick with fireproofing around the edges, asbestos insulation inside and out, precast beam ceilings with metal mesh reinforcement throughout, Terrazzo flooring on three stories high with handrails above each story terminating on terrazzo floors/wallings below)
