Debary, Florida is a small town in Collier County, Florida, United States. It is located on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico between Fort Myers and Naples. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. As of 2016, it was estimated to have a population of 6,419. The town has been inhabited for over two centuries by Floridians who came to work on the sugar plantations in this area. In 1824 Oleander Harris established a ferry service from St Augustine to Debary for passengers and goods arriving from Cuba and other parts of America. A post office was established in 1829 and named after General James Pindling (1799-1868), commanding general during Seminole War (1836-39). The first store opened in 1830 under the name "Harris & Co." A cotton gin was erected in 1835 and became known as "Pindling's Gin". In 1840 Jacksonville developer William Brickell donated land east of town for an agricultural college which would later become University of Miami School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a municipality on January 12, 1845. On November 15th that year they also voted to rename their community "Debary" after Colonel Edwin Townsend Debark (1780-1857), assistant adjutant general with Ulysses S. Grant's army at Gadsden Hill during Sherman's successful march through Alabama in 1864; debark had accompanied Grant when he reached Mobile Bay on March 10th that year but did not participate in the battle or its aftermath. Townsite selection meetings were held throughout December preceding incorporation; Hardeman & Company offered $1 per acre for development rights along US 90 from Main Street southward to US 1; only one offer was accepted, resulting in Debary becoming unincorporated territory withinCollier County until January 2nd 1870 when it reincorporated as partSpartanburg County with Hardeman owning all future land within that county boundaries Hardeman continued leasing land parcels near downtown until his death in 1865 before any development occurred A schoolhouse/ Methodist church building stood vacant until 1886 when it burned down due to fire set by local boys while playing around the property A new school built on what is now State Road 3019 reopened on September 25th 1903 . This building served as both schools until 1945 when DeBary High School moved into its current location across SR 3019 from Sanibel Island Naval Air Station

In 1846, Andrew Jarrell built an inn and store on US 1 near present day US 301A east of town hall which became known as Jarrell's Post Office/ grocery store and still stands today with its original building still standing next to it. It was also here that Abraham Lincoln made his inaugural address on April 12th 1865 following his victory over Drury Lane’s forces at Ford’s Theatre in Baltimore Maryland. The post office continued until 1903 when it closed due to changes in postal service regulations that limited mail delivery from Jacksonville to Tallahassee;- one reason being President Theodore Roosevelt’s visit there on February 16th 1904 where he delivered a speech before both houses of Congress nominating William Jennings Bryan for Vice President underGrover Cleveland- making Debary again a center point for mail deliveries for many years afterwards! There are several other buildings associated with this period such as: Bank of America Building (now home to Trinity Episcopal Church), First National Bank Building (now home to Plaza Mall) and Third National Bank Building (now home to Joe Gibbs Automotive). Most notably however is Gadsden Hotel which now operates as the Visitors Center for Historic Debary Towne since 1996! In 1912, Samples Iron Works began production at what is now west Main Street just south of Gadsden Hotel;- this plant manufacturing cast iron products until 1964 when it closed due to low sales volume combined with World War II military Dieter Bros AG steel plants located nearby not needing anymore heavy cast iron so they dismantled all their equipment including Samples Iron Works & moved it across I-10 into Newnan Georgia; leaving behind some beautiful old cast iron pieces from Samples Iron Works along with some research data about how CastIron works! This story isn't just about History though - One can explore every inch of this wonderful old mill complex today by visiting either side street called "Samples" or "Newnan". Today you can walk up one side street and down another streets within walking distance from each other – providing plenty opportunities for photos & stories too! All told -Samples Iron Works produced over 100 metric tons(of cast iron)during their brief time here – more than any other company ever did within those boundaries! debarytownsite

The present-day town began to develop around the railroad depot which served as its first commercial center. In 1898 when the tracks were relocated to this location and new businesses opened up along them, Debary became known as "the Junction". A post office called Debary was established in 1902, and remained in operation until 1958. In 1907 a group of businessmen bought land east of the depot and started developing what would become known as "Debary Farms". This agricultural community thrived for many years despite difficult times during World War II because it had access to healthy food that didn't come from local farms. In 1957 the town's primary school was constructed on land donated by Mrs. Lillie Clementson and it has been operating ever since under her name. Today Debary has several cultural attractions including its own golf course (founded in 1949), shopping mall (opened in 1984), two churches (one Congregationalist and one Baptist), a health resort/spa (opened in 1997), as well as an extensive agricultural system that includes dairy farming, corn processing, beef production and poultry production among others.

The town was originally named after the brother-in-law of one of the founders, and it was initially known as "Rancho Debary." In 1875, the town name was changed to "Debary" after its founder, John A. Debary. The town's first post office opened in 1876. The first store in Debary opened in 1886. The population of Debary peaked at 513 people in 1920, but declined to 474 people by 1950. The last resident died in 1978.
