Debary, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The trade name for Debary is "The Gun Slings Capital of the World." Debary was founded in 1887 by slaves who worked on a sugarcane plantation and moved to this location in 1892 when the plantation closed down. It has been called "The Gun Slings Capital of the World" because it has become one of the most popular locations for people to sling firearms around as a form of recreation and self-defense. In addition to itsgunslingsactivity, Debary also has a thriving restaurant and nightlife scene that draws people from all over Jacksonville for dining, dancing and entertainment. In 1969, Mayor Bob Jelley passed an ordinance making it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess or use any firearm without first getting a license from their local police department. This law remains in place today and provides immunity from prosecution if someone violates this ordinance.

The first European to visit the area now known as Debary was Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 on his trip from Cuba to Hispaniola. He named it "Pensacola" after his hometown of Havana, Cuba. A post office was established in 1824 and became a village in 1829. The name changed again to Debary in 1851 when the town built a new courthouse and jail and platted its own streets. In 1865, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Pensacola so much that Debary's only businesses were groceries and shipping supplies; by 1870, however, business had revived with the opening of an electric streetcar line which connected Pensacola with nearby Port Charlotte. Development continued through World War II until a series of devastating hurricanes caused economic decline and displacement beginning in 1945 which ultimately led to the town's abandonment during the 1950s Today there are few reminders that once Debary thrived as a small community centered around commerce and transportation; most notable is its large park located east of downtown where people can enjoy nature trails, play soccer or baseball games or listen to music all day long without having to worry about getting home before dark or finding parking for their cars during peak hours.
