Debary, Florida was once a thriving town that was known for its gun security. It is now a ghost town as most of the residents have been killed by gunmen. The town had a gun store and magazine which were both destroyed in 1919 when terrorist bombers bombed the city. The only survivor of this bombing was the owner, John A. Boynton, who used his knowledge of explosives to rebuild the store and magazines. In 1951, Debary was again targeted when terrorists bombed the city with bombs that killed thirty-six people and injured seventy-four others. John Boynton rebuilt his store and magazine once again but it too was destroyed in 1974 by terror bombers travelling on a hijacked US passenger jetliner. This attack caused $2 million in damage to the building which is still standing today despite being hit by another bomb in 2006. Today, there are no guns stores or magazines in Debary and it is considered one of America's safest cities for owning firearms.

The town was founded by settlers in 1842 and named for General James Wilkinson Debary who fought in the Seminole Wars. The first post office was established in 1845 and the first school was built in 1850. In 1898, Debary became an incorporated municipality and its first mayor was Hemanus Dickey. In 1912, Debary organized its own fire department and adopted a city charter that provided for a Mayor-Council form of government with one member from each ward serving four years terms with no possibility of re-election beyond that term; however, this system never took hold and Debary reverted to a Village form of government after World War II until it gained full Municipal status again in 1978. Debary has several notable landmarks including: The Depot which is the only surviving example of a passenger train depot built during America's most rapid expansion as a result of railroadssuch as Miami Railways (later known as Amtrak) ; The Volunteer Fire Department Station No 2 which serves as the primary tourist attraction; The Lady Bird Johnson Presidential Library & Museum located on US 41 just south of Interstate 5 Exit 107A; And AFS Aquarium which is home to some world's largest Indo-Pacific coralarium and more than 20 different fish species along with an accompanying exhibit building housing more than 1 million square feet (1002 m²)of exhibit space
