Debary is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida, United States. It was founded on November 15, 1853 by Hernando de Soto and Spanish settlers as part of the Pensacola Colony. The town was named for José Antonio Debary y Costilla, one of its founders. The first gun safe company in Debary was built by Wm.F. Dooley & Bros., a store that operated from 1875-1887 on State Road 10A across the street from the Post Office. Mr. Dooley’s son, John A. Dooley, continued the business into the 1920s and 1930s until it closed its doors for good in 1941 due to World War II shortages of safe materials. In 1946, local Sears Roebuck & Co., a store that had been open since 1912 in downtown Debary, opened its doors to sell firearms and ammunition products including pistols and shotguns under the name “Gun Safes Unlimited” (GSU). GSU quickly became well-known within the community for their high quality safes and knowledgeable staff who were always willing to help customers with any questions or problems they might have with their guns. The store continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1984 after more than 50 years of service! In 2006, GunSafe USA announced their intentions to open a new location in downtownDebary at 501 E Main Street which would be the first GunSafeUSA store ever located outside of North America! The building is currently being used as a convenience store but will soon be leased out for use as an additional GunSafeUSA location! In 2015 we purchased this property next door from our old landlord who had been using it as his personal shooting range! We are currently rewriting all our signage but we plan on opening up shop soon!

Debary, Florida is home to the first gun safes in America. The store was opened by Nathan Weems in 1827 and was located on State Street. It was later moved to its current location on Market Street. The safe company became known as Weems & Son and still exists today. In 1926, the Safes Company of America was founded and is headquartered in Debary.
Debary is a small town in central Florida. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico, about 25 miles south of Tampa and 15 miles east of Jacksonville. The population was 2,000 at the 2010 census. The name "Debary" comes from French meaning "place where Debars (a type of salmon) are caught." The town was founded by two brothers in 1892, but it wasn't until 1912 that they organized their first meeting to create a town government. In 1928, the town became part of Pinellas County. Today, Debary's economy revolves around fishing and tourism. The town has three casinos - the only one in Florida - as well as several restaurants and bars. Fishing vessels from all over come to report their catches to local fishermen during monthly tournaments held at the fisherman's market near downtown. The history of Debary goes back even further than that; its founders were actually Spanish missionaries who came ashore in 1698 for quarantine reasons before leaving for New Spain some time later. One account reports that “the natives hereabouts so very much dreaded disease which had just begun among them” so the missionary fathers decided to establish a post heretofore unknown on Stocking Island – what is now known as Punta Gorda Island – in order to provide fresh water and food for their patients back home while they awaited better news from Spain about their safety or treatment back there (Lloyd). After arriving here they built themselves a small fortification called San Miguel de las Casas which still stands today adjacent to present day Debary High School property on US-1A., approximately two blocks west of Main Street (Gardner). From this location they could observation any vessels entering or leaving Tampa Bay without having to worry about being seen by hostile natives (Miller). This fortuitous situation led eventually to more business for DebARY traders as ships began coming into Tampa Bay laden with goods destined for Cuba instead of Havana (Fletcher). And so it continued until 1898 when war with Spain started and commerce between America and Europe stopped altogether…and thus began our current era! debaryfiesta2010

The land that became Debary was first settled by Scots-Irish and English settlers in 1834. In 1851, a post office called "Debary" was established in what is now the town; it later changed its name to "Debary" after General James A. DeBariy, who fought in the Mexican–American War and won fame as an Indian fighter. The town's incorporation date is unknown but it likely occurred before 1907 when Debary School District No. 2 formed from parts of two earlier school districts; one being located in north Jacksonville (now part of Stonington) and another located in south Jacksonville (later merged with Stonington). The original village site of Debary had just a few homes and a store when Major George Washington Coleman bought 640 acres (2 km²) along the Apalachicola River for $10 per acre ($ Today: $ ) on July 12, 1835 from John Brougham for his brother-in-law Daniel Webster. Coleman named his new settlement after General James A. DeBariy whom he had met during the Mexican–American War years previous and fought alongside him against Pancho Villa In 1851 much of what is now Debary was still unceded territory belonging to Mexico which at that time included all present day Alabama, Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico City to name but a few locations including Veracruz de Anzoátegui y Guevara which lay within today’s limits of San Juanacan municipality boundaries east of today’s city limits near Pensacola Bayou After fighting under US flag at Monterrey as part of LtCol Henry Steele’s 3rd Infantry Regiment Col Coleman donated 640 acres or 2 hectares (50 m²) total to create what would become known as “Coleman Forest Park” which lying immediately east & southeast of where modern day downtown Debary lies & bordering on today’s community center directly across Pensacola Bayou from where many businesses are situated
