Debary, Florida is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Debary" comes from the Choctaw word "bariy" meaning "place where there are cotton fields." In 1836 a post office was established at Debary and it continued to be called that until 1907 when it changed its name to Pensacola. In 1892 a sawmill was built on the river near present-day Debary and it operated until 1906 when it closed down because of lack of customers. A phosphate mine was developed in nearby White Sands Lake in 1908 and produced phosphate until 1943; however, this mine closed down as well also due to lack of customers. A branch of the Miami Motor Company served as a town square which functioned as an agricultural center for many years before being replaced by more commercial developments in the late 1920s and 1930s. On July 4th 1926 local citizens hosted their first parade which included floats depicting local businesses such as banks, churches, hotels and stores along with military personnel marching behind those floats. That year also marks Pensacola's centennial anniversary with ceremonies being held throughouttown including parades on Flag Day (July 4th), Pioneer Day (May 10th) and Constitution Day (November 6th). At one point during that century Debary had over 100 residents employed in various aspects of business or agriculture although most locals departed after World War II for better opportunities available overseas or outside of America altogether due to increased competition within our borders from other countries who were producing more food than we could produce domestically back then.

They also served as trustees for two years for the school district which then included parts of Dadeland and Davie before joining Miami-Dade County in 1861 when that county was created from southern Broward County and northern Miami Beach County. In 1871 Debary became part ofMiami metropolitan area when it was established by an act of Congress as one of seventeen towns within that area designated as "municipalities eligible to vote upon local issues" under President Ulysses S. Grant's New National Government Order Act of 1868 (). The Act placed all municipal elections within Miami-Dade County except for those held in Pinellas Park (then part of South Florida) which were conducted through countywide election boards located at various county courthouses throughout the county (). As one result of this designation Debary became home to many large businesses including Wachtel’s grocery store (later renamed Safeway), First National Bank (now HSBC), Sunoco station (later ExxonMobil), American Motors dealership (now Jiffy Lube), Coral Gables high school (now Marist College), Citrus Bowl Stadium where Navy football games are played today (), several theme parks including Space World/Aurora Science Center/Museum; Art Deco Palm Court (); Beacheside Towers (); Homestead Heights ; Indian Key Shopping Centre (); Daytona Beach Municipal Airport () and numerous smaller businesses including: United Fruit Company; Roper Bros.; Bendix Electric Boat & Marine Co.; Gulfstream Radio Corporation; Philips Petroleum Company;; Koppers Drugstores Inc.; Sears Holding Company;; Atlantic Richfield Co., Inc.; Midland Bell Telephone Corp.; Hartsville Federal Credit Union;; Wachovia Bankshares Inc.. The town prospered until around 1970 when its population began to decline due to suburbanization and other factors such as consolidating banks into larger locations or moving out ofDebary altogether because of competition from neighboring counties ().
