De Land is a small town in central Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Highlands County and was founded in 1836. The name "De Land" means "the land that flows down." The population was 6,739 at the 2010 census. De Land is located on State Road 17 and U.S. Highway 90 north of Tallahassee. The first settlers to De Land were farmers who came from Massachusetts in 1836, when Seminole War veteran Captain Arthur Stonington sold his land to George Hatton and others for $5 per acre. This area became known as Stonington's Landing because of this sale. The first store opened in 1838 and soon after educational institutions began to be established: the Jacksonville Female Academy in 1840, the Highland Male and female Normal School in 1841, and Hillsborough County Agricultural College (later University) in 1846-48. In 1865, Highlands County acquired title to all of what are now DeLand Township, Parkland County acquisition following an action by General William Troup during the American Civil War based on his theory that part of Florida should be given as free territory to Union soldiers due to its rich phosphate deposits (it would later become part of Broward County). In 1840, Fort Taylor was built on a hill above present-day DeLand by Major John Batey as a supply point for Confederate forces retreating through Floridas southern border into Mexico City before turning around and returning home across state lines back into Georgia where they awaited orders from Richmond; it served until 1898 when it was used as a base camp for construction of US Military Pacific Railroad tunnel under US military zone south of Panama Canal Zone boundary line - modern dayFort Walton Beach - which completed 1912 Thereafter development slowed due almost exclusively to lack of transportation links between DeLand area with adjacent county seats Kissimmee/Bayamon/Coconut Creek etc., until motorized travel became available over long distance routes starting around World War II onwards making this agricultural center economically feasible with easy access via Interstate highways

The history ofDeLand goes back much further than that though; it is one of only two communities in Palm Beach County (the other being Jupiter) that were founded prior to 1895 when annexation into Palm Beach County happened through population growth rather than via annexation by another town or city charter amendment like many others throughout the county at that time. One significant event from this early period occurred on July 4th 1865 when 800 residents from Jupiter marched down State Road 509A towards Fort Myers after complaints about high taxes levied against them by then-County Commissioner John Lamberton Sr.. The march ended up resulting in a failed attempt by Jaxonians to secede from their home county - an event which helped catalyze public support for annexation into Palm Beach County subsequent year One reason why DeLand retains such strong roots within local culture today is because most aspects of daily life are controlled either directly or indirectly by the municipal government - including zoning ordinances, school districts, fire departments etc.; all issues which have been subject to change over time but have generally retained their same basic form since they were created circa 1925-ish!
