In 1960, it became the first municipality in Florida to provide drinking water for all residents without private wells or tanks. The city has been aggressive in promoting itself as an outdoor recreation center and business center; it has constructed many miles of hiking trails and built several lakes including Lake Tohopee which is home to the world's largest artificial pond and offers swimming opportunities for both humans and fish (although it's closed during most months). The city also sponsors numerous cultural events throughout the year such as art shows, music festivals and literary readings.

One such device was called a "taser." It consisted of an electric current running through a wire around the user's body, causing him or her to feel shocked when the current passed through their skin. From there, they became increasingly popular among civilians as they became less harmful and more effective than knuckles-on-the-face Stun Guns. In 1955, the U.S. military began using tasers as an incapacitating weapon. In 1973, the Canadian military became the first to use tasers as a weapon in combat.
De Land is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1868 by Elisha K. DeLand and his wife Eliza Burt DeLand as a stop on their route from Jacksonville to Tampa. The name "De Land" is derived from the Seminole word "deland". The first post office was established in 1870, and the town had its first census taken in 1880. In 1903, the railroad arrived, and De Land became an important center for transportation. The population grew rapidly during prohibition-era America; by 1920, it had reached 100 people. By 1925, however, the population had shrunk to about 50 people due to migration to larger towns in Polk County. The growth of agriculture during the 20th century caused a decline in population; by 1970, only 10 people lived in De Land. However, because of its location on US Highway 98 (the Floridian Turnpike), De Land has remained an important cultural and commercial center for the surrounding area ever since. Today, De Land is home to a variety of businesses including two banks (First National Bank & Trust and Community Bank), four restaurants (Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant & Bakery; Gatorade Store; Pinnacle Grill & Seafood) and three churches (Church of God Christ Bible Church; First Baptist Church & Methodist Episcopal Church). As well as several thousand residents who work within localized businesses or specialties such as architecture or funeral services.
On October 8, 1868, a group of Seminole Indians led by their chief, Major Osceola, attacked and killed white settlers in what is now De Land Township. The attack was the start of a decades-long struggle between the Seminoles and the colonists.
