In 1824 De Land was founded by James A. DeLand and his brother-in-law George Talbot as a landing on the Stonington River for prospectors looking for land to sell to Native Americans. The first post office was established in 1828, and named "Mount Vernon." In 1840, John Fenton bought 3,000 acres (1 km²) of land between the Apalachicola River and US 17 east of De Land and developed it into what is now Jacksonville Beach. In 1851 Floridians voted to incorporate as a town under the name "DeLand". In 1865, Governor Andrew Johnson approved an act that changed its name from Jacksonville Beach to DeLand after him. The population increased rapidly during the American Civil War due to both military service and travel; by 1870 it had reached 1,500 people. again through war service (1865-1868), immigration (1901), real estate speculation (1914), citrus farming (1920s), development of retail stores (1950s), professional sports teams (1960s & 1970s), high school education until 1987 when Duval County closed all but two schools within its boundaries;[2] then total enrollment fell gradually until 2000 reaching its current level of 1,812 residents.[3] The town's economy has been primarily based on agriculture although some manufacturing and services have been added over time including: plastics manufacturing starting in the early 1960s,[4][5] petrochemical production beginning in 1984,[6][7] agricultural equipment manufacturing beginning in 2002,[8][9][10] liquefied natural gas production starting in 2006[11], construction materials such as asphalt and concrete[12], truck driving services[13], homebuilding[14], health care with clinics located mainly outside city limits since 1987,[15]:['16]'17'18'19[]
