De Land, Florida is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach-Boca Raton metropolitan area. A land grant was made to Captain Pedro Menéndez de Avilés by King Philip II of Spain in 1565 for his exploration and settlement of the west coast of America. The town was founded by Captain John Rolfe and James Cook on April 12, 1775 as Fort Rolanda during the American Revolutionary War as part of the unsuccessful attempt to capture Pensacola from Spain. In 1821 De Land became a part of Escambia County and named after General José Martínez de La Guerra y la Laguna who fought against Spanish rule in South America before returning home toEscambia County in 1819 with news that Mexico had become independent from Spain and had begun an insurgency against Spanish rule known as the Mexican Revolution led by Antonio López de Santa Anna which ended with his death at Monterrey River February 14, 1846; this event also marked the end of Spanish sovereignty over Escambia County During Reconstruction following World War II many African Americans moved into DeLand from nearby Mobile because it remained an all white community until integration began there in earnest beginning in earnest with desegregation buses serving DeLand on October 1st 1954 after years of Fruitport bus service being provided only within Mobile proper; this integrated bus service continued until 1993 when transportation authorities announced plans to build a new shopping mall near downtown that would better accommodate blacks while also providing more jobs than either existing areas; this project never happened due to opposition from white business owners who felt they had been given unfair advantage since they controlled most available transportation routes within city limits) In recent years much development has occurred within or around downtown including several large office complexes such as One Financial Plaza situated across Duval Street from Gulfstream Park just off US 92/ Foley Road next door to Veterans Memorial Coliseum which house major league baseball games every other week year round plus numerous concerts throughout the year as well as dozens of smaller businesses catering mainly to both light industrial and small commercial customers alongDuval Street between Foley Road & US 92/ Foley Road giving rise today (2010)to one significant traffic issue: its highly congested condition caused by heavy truck traffic passing throughDuval Street on I-95 exit 219 (Gulfstream Park exit) which leads directly into Gulfstream Park

De Land was a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States, located on the eastern side of the state. The community was established in 1868 by John DeLand and his wife Sarah Isenberg. It originally consisted of only a few dwellings and a Methodist church. By 1880, the population had increased to 100 people. The De Land post office was established in 1871; it continued until it closed in 1953. The first telephone service arrived in De Land in 1886. In 1896, the De Land School District was formed; it remained until it disbanded in 1959. In 1907, De Land became part of the newly created Citrus County; it remains an official county seat today. In 1919, George Cribb opened Ville de France restaurant on Second Street; this became one of the most popular restaurants in Citrus County during this time period. Additionally, J H Barton started construction on what is now known as Barton's Place which served as a grocery store and liquor warehouse from 1922-1925. This building still stands today and is used as a storage area for local businesses today. DeLand also experienced some significant growth during World War II; many residents found employment at nearby Camp Blanding or at other military facilities throughout the war. Many homes were built within those years around Second Street near where present day Interstate 95 meets First Street; these homes were later destroyed by fire when they were renovated for use as apartments during the late 1990s/early 2000s boom period that followed Hurricane Ivan’s landfall over Florida (see photos below).
In 1881, De Land was settled by men from the Dutch colony of Curaçao. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a U.S. post office in 1882. It declined in importance until it regained its prominence during World War II as an Army airfield and naval base. In 1945, the Air Force moved De Land to Fort Myers, Florida, because of the increasing size of the military in Southern Florida at that time. DeLand's population peaked at over 1,500 people in 1950 but decreased to fewer than 500 by 1970 due to retirement and other factors.
