De Land, Florida is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the DeLand micropolitan statistical area. The town was founded by German settlers in 1859 and named for Wilhelm De Land, a landowner in Bavaria who had helped finance US President James K. Polk's1852 campaign to gain admission to the United States as a country without slavery. The community grew slowly until its incorporation as a municipality in 1904. In the 1920s and 1930s, De Land became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida due to its natural resources – including mangrove swamps and springs that provide drinking water for cattle, wells for farming, and lumber for building – as well as its history dating back to 1859. Today, De Land retains some traditional features of its German culture such as Volksfestivals (festival festivals), which are held each year on different days around Christmas or Easter; its annual farmers' market; and its independent grocery store chain known locally as "The Grog Shop."

De Land is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Doctrine Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot on what is now De Land was Captain John Smith in 1614. He named it after his home country, Denmark. A post office called DeLand was established in 1827 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1836, American Revolutionary War veteran James King built a cabin on the island which he named "De Land." It is believed that this name stuck because no one else had anything better to offer and it sounded good when pronounced byAmericans who were unfamiliar with Danish names. In 1840, another American named Moses Green bought land surrounding King's cabin and began construction of his own house on what would become known as Green Hill Creek Road (later State Road 9). Green Hill Creek Road became State Road 9 when it was re-paved in 1949. In 1886, two brothers from Stoningtonville founded a store and mill at present-day White Sands Beach Boulevard (SR 9) just south of De Land Bridge over Bayou de Luda (now bayous de Luda/Luda Landing Rd.). A post office called White Sands Beach Boulevard was established in 1886 and remained in operation until 1984. In 1918, US Army Air Forces combat pilot Lt Colonel Edward Hutton flew his first powered airplane from White Sands Beach Boulevard to Pensacola Airport using an 8x4 engine borrowed from the USAAF Station at Santa Rosa Island; White Sands Beach Boulevard served as the only paved airstrip within 25 miles of Pensacola Airport during World War II. In 1948, following passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1947 (Public Law 95–1), Escambia County purchased land east of SR 9 between SR 2 and SR 3 for use as an open space park including Preserve de la Luz Park & Preserve de las Palmas Park; today's intersection of Bayou Lafitte Drive (SR 2) and state road 523 forms part of that original purchase date. As late as 1951 local residents were still using King's Cabin name for their private home while also using Blackwater creek/White Sands beach Blvd./State road 523 interchange designation for public transportation purposes; according to published records there are no current references to any such usage today other than thru historical research conducted thru internet searches & oral interviews over many years ago! On July 4th 1928 Dr Fenton Wagoner opened up a small hospital / dispensary at present day White Sands beach Blvd.,(then State road 523),just south of DeLand bridge overbayou de Luda (& later bayousde Luda landing Rd.) After almost 10 years providing care for patients with various contagious diseases he retired early due to advanced age & health problems leaving behind a legacy that continues today! Today Blue Cross Blue Shield operates outpatients services from this facility acrossbayou Lafitte from White sands beach Blvd.(then state road 523)) HistoricBrowns place operated outpatients services here too prior to 1993!
