De Land is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in De Land were the Timucua Indians who inhabited the area before European settlement began. In 1836, General James K. Polk and his army invaded Florida and laid claim to all of present-day Polk County without regard for Indian boundaries. As a result, much of what is now DeLand was originally Seminole territory that eventually became part of modern day Tampa Bay. In 1868, landowner William Hixon subdivided land into lots and sold them to settlers including David Brower and his brother John Dickson Brower (founder of Hillsborough). By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in De Land; many were farmers who grew corn, cotton, sugar beets and other crops on their lands. In 1875-76 Captain John Fenton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of town from Drayton Wirtz for £1 million ($14 million at current prices). This acquisition made Fenton one of Florida's most powerful landowners. After selling his interest in Fenton's farm to another investor in 1896 for $3 million ($43 million at current prices), he retired from farming altogether and devoted himself entirely to developing De Land into a busy commercial center with cotton mills, warehouses and stores as well as homes for various wealthy families which developed around him during this time period known as "The Gilded Age." By 1910 De Land had grown considerably; it had a population of 2,362 people consisting mostly of farmers with some industry also established such as an elevator company founded by George Aversa in 1909 which continues today as Avera Tower Company LLC headquartered inDeLand/Tampa Bay prospered through its early years until being acquired by JDS Unipharmaceuticals Incorporated effective December 31st 2006 . The William Hixon House still stands today within walking distance from all the commerical centers forming what would become known later as downtown DeLand or even more appropriately "Downtown Tampa" due to its changing fortunes over time

De Land is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name De Land may come from "delaware" or "land of long laurel", as it is located on the Delmarva Peninsula and has many tall white oak trees. According to one source, the post office opened in 1892 with only nine residents. The first settler was George Wrights who arrived in 1892 from Ohio with his wife and five children. He set up a farm on what is now US-1 south of present day DeLand. In 1896, Wm Hickey settled down along US-1 between present day DeLand and Jacksonville and began raising cotton and shipping goods across Chesapeake Bay to Wilmington and Baltimore; this started what would become known as Hickey's Cotton Mill which never closed its doors until it ceased operations in 1978 due to environmental concerns In 1898 Jno Farrand erected a cabin on current day State Road 6 west of town which became known as Farrand's Cabin because he did all the work himself including planting crops, annualizing gardens, building houses and cisterns etc.. By 1903 there were over 100 residents living in DeLand with about 60 businesses employing 350 workers associated with 12 churches & 10 schools…early 20th century events that led to growth included prohibition raids by law enforcement officers followed by alcoholics coming into town seeking refuge; an agreement was made by both factions not to fight each other after several skirmishes took place; during World War I when munitions plants were established around Jacksonville they brought jobs into town; this created demand for housing so business owners built more stores
De Land is a town in southeastern Florida, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kissimmee-Provence-Alachua County, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The De Land community was founded in 1851 by Captain John Baptist De Land and his wife centerfold Billie after they left Fort Walton Beach for good. The first post office opened in 1852, and the town name came to be known as "DeLand". In 1898, De Land became part of Miami metropolitan area. In 1923, the U.S. Army built Miamisburg Air Force Base on land that had been deeded to the city by Jens Jensen and his family in 1922 as an inducement for them to come to work with Washington County's then-new airport project. By 1928, Miamisburg AFB had become one of the world's largest airbases with a total capacity of over 100 bombers and fighters per day! During World War II, many businesses were closed due to bombing raids or because of lack of customers; however most people managed to get back on their feet quickly thanks to government aid programs such as food stamps and temporary housing vouchers. After VE Day (the end of World War II), many Americans returned home from combat areas overseas - including some who had taken up farming - but few new homes were built until after 1965 when zoning laws changed so that more subdivisions could be built near airports (which made it easier for developers). In 1984 De Land lost its charter as a city due to budget cuts by then- mayor Artur Patek; however it regained its charter two years later when voters passed an ordinance changing how city meetings are held so that citizens have more say about what happens in their community. City officials currently manage all aspects of local government within the limits set by state law which allow for less centralized control from city officials than what is allowed under city charters dating back prior thereto. In 2002 annexation by Kissimmee led to increased taxes which fund public services while also increasing growth potential for downtown areas now adjacent to I-4 freeway/ Interstate 95 exit 134A; this has resulted in complaints from residents about excessive development along I-4 corridor away from older neighborhoods which can no longer support their typical Main Street lifestyle without becoming overwhelmed by traffic noise and high levels of pollution
