Scope mounts have been in use for centuries in De Land, Florida. The first permanent scope mount was built by Major John S. Armstrong in 1892 on the property of Judge Augustus Neely. In 1914, Captain Edward Fenton purchased land adjacent to Judge Neely's home and built a new observatory. It didn't take long for Captain Fenton to realize that he needed a better way to view his telescope than using the roof of his house as a base. So he ordered two scopes from Krusell & Company and installed them on nearby trees. In 1925, Captain Robert Wickersham donated an unused radio shack on his farm to be used as an observatory. He also provided some tools and equipment, including a reflector and microphone, which were used by astronomers from De Land until 1942 when the military took over the observatory. The late 1940s saw significant growth in astronomy due to World War II efforts to improve radar accuracy across all sectors of the country. However, because of wartime restrictions on amateur activity, only amateur astronomers were able to access De Land's telescopes during this time period. In 1947, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hickey purchased land north of Judge Neely's home after seeing an advertisement for it in a local paper. He began renovations on what would become known as "The Observatory" and named it after himself – Hickey Observatory (DeLand). In 1957-1959 Commander Vinson Aiken donated three Schmidt cameras which allowed us to image Earth from space! Commodore James Bogue operated The Observatory from 1968 until its closure in 1990 following Hurricane Andrew which destroyed much of the structure including most of the instruments within months! Today there is still evidence remaining at The Observatory such as old photographic plates that can be viewed through gift shop windows!

On December 10th 1920 – after years of planning – Panama Canal expansion project began with construction beginning on mile marker 8 on State Road A1A (which then ran through what is now downtown) just east of town limits; this highway would eventually become state road 441 which skirts around most of downtown today while also running nearpresent day Interstate 441 or US-4 Business ( concurrent with SR-441). This project created over 400 jobs during its duration including those at nearby Stonington Canalside Light House which still functions today! The city charter### was amended in 1921 to allow for prohibition; however this didn't take hold until 1933 when Volstead Act passed making all alcohol illegal statewide!Municipal elections were held on November 2nd 1932 with incumbent Mayor Wm Oldham defeating challenger J C Hillenberger by only 5%! Voters approved annexation into the city limits but did not reelect Mayor Oldham who left to start his own business two years later! Aftercontinuing struggles between citizens and their City Council members (resulting in several financial difficulties) Wm Oldham returned to office for a fourth term in 1936 and successfully ran for reelection in 1938 despite being challenged by future Miami Beach Mayor Manuel Dominguez who had moved from :=To =Orlando +=

The first true self-contained riflescope appeared in 1847 when British gunsmith George Stephenson invented the Stephenson Rifle Scope (SRR). This device consisted of an objective lens assembly that sat within a dovetail mounting plate that had been designed specifically for rifle optics purposes. By 1850, nearly all rifle scopes had been designatically designated "scope" type devices and this term began being used generally throughout European firearms literature dating back to these early days when rifles were primarily muzzleloaders/smoke grenades rather than accurate pistols or shotguns! A few significant advances occurred during this time include: In 1892 Dr John Sebright developed what would become known as Celestron Eyepieces which eliminated any need for physical adjustments while under magnification; Also in 1892 Alvan Clark introduced his Parallax Tube Telescope which incorporated parallax adjustment features into every tube; Finally Vespaubes introduced adjustable arms mounted directly on top of telescopes making it possible for users To adjust focus even while looking down at target sights; responsible for greatly increasing telescope sighting reliability! Some noteworthy innovations during this era include: Andrey Vesely's invention of removable base turrets allowing essentially unlimited adjustments between zeroing turret heights & aim point positions; Edwin Hubble’s discovery about black holes emitting bright light from nearby galaxies; Edwin Armstrong’s work on high power photography utilizing various types & shapes objective lenses etc….. All these advancements led ultimately to increased Accuracy achieved thru telescope use!

In 1912, Donatien Fonseca built a small sawmill on White Sands Road near where he lived for many years later. This mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses until it closed down in 1984 due to environmental concerns about its operations. In 1971, voters passed an ordinance establishing that all retail establishments must display a 'John Lennon' sticker whenever they sell items bearing that artist's name or image without prior consent from either him or any of his representatives appearing on behalf of Lennon Enterprises Ltd., which then became known as Yoko Ono Enterprises Ltd.. As time went by other artists such as REM and John Paul Jones were featured with similar stickers - becoming known as 'John Peel Stickers'. These stickers continued to be displayed up until 2003 when they were removed following public pressure after John Lennon's death at age 61 (from cancer). Today only items purchased at participating stores bear Lennon stickers - no longer are any items sold without permission from one or more representatives appearing on behalf of Yoko Ono Enterprises Ltd.. At present day there are over 1,500 businesses operating within downtownDeLand including restaurants, cafes, grocery stores and medical centers - making it one of the most active business districts in Southeast Florida!

In 1846, De Land was a small, unincorporated community located in Collier County, Florida. The area became a part of Jacksonville after the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1814. In 1868, De Land was renamed Jacksonville after the city's first mayor, James K. Polk.
