De Land, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood metropolitan area. De Land is located on the east side of citrus country and bordered by Orange County to the south and west. The first known permanent European settler in what is now De Land was Manuel de la Rosa who arrived on horseback from Mexico City in 1692. A surveyor named George Rogers landed here on November 12, 1775 with his brother James Rogers while exploring the western coast of Florida for new land opportunities; they were among the first white men to set foot in what is now Citrus County. In 1837 DeLand became part of Seminole Indian Territory under Osceola Creek Nation after it was ceded by Seminole leader Gaines Lawless to that nation. In 1846 it became a part of Alabama as a result of General Andrew Jackson's purchase of all Spanish/Indian land east of Mobile Bay including present day Citrus County. A post office called "DeLand" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1958. The community name may be derived from Dutch settlers who crossredland near this spot early on; their word "eland" means 'land'. The town website claims that Drury’s Landing (now Demopolis) probably originated with these pioneers but there are no records to support this claim anywhere else within or outside De Land itself - which means that either one or both assertions may be true! On July 4th 1888, a group led by Hernando Ponce de León disembarked at Demopolis Cove off Demopolis Beach after finding an amazing piece of FLOODED land which they named La Isla del Coco (Island of Coco). They soon realized that this wasn't really an island at all but rather most likely some chunk outcropping onshore that had been exposed due to high tides during Typhoon Ida... so they renamed it again to La Isla de Las Palmas (Island of Saint Mary). However, locals stillCalling it "La Isla" because you can see her from pretty much everywhere! So we’ll just keep calling it La Isla until someone offers some proof otherwise LOL! While people continue debating this issue...actually living on her still makes me feel better about not being able to say anything definitive :) It wasn't until 1893 when Floridian John Fenton purchased 3 square miles (later 5 square miles) adjacent to what would become today's downtown core for $3 per acre ($60 per mile²), setting the stage for yearslong development around downtown DeLand waterfront and riverfront properties along US Highway 327 northward into Orange County
