Wayfinder named the area after his home country, Ireland. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Cuba and discovered a group of Timucua living there. Afterward, the United States military began stocking up on supplies and troops in order to invade Cuba. In 1826, President John Quincy Adams ordered General Thomas Polk to send an expedition into Spanish Florida to explore possible sources of irrigation water for America's growing cotton industry. On July 20th of that year, Lieutenant Colonel George Maney arrived at Pensacola with news that he had found a river flowing south from Cuba and it led southwest to what is now De Land. The US military took over management of the land from the Timucua and began farming it for cotton.
