De Land is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. The history of De Land goes back to 1853 when it was organized as part of the Seminole Indian Nation. In 1907, De Land became part of the newly created Citrus County and later Palm Beach County. It was annexed by Broward County in 1959. The name "DeLand" comes from the Chiriqui language word "deland". de land means 'the place where there are palm trees'. The first settler in what is now De Land were two brothers named John and James Gadsden who arrived in 1853 from Georgia. They built a cabin on a hill near present day Sanford and named their new settlement after themselves - DeLand or Deland for 'the place where palms grow'. In 1907, Citrus County was formed from parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. On January 3, 1959, De Land became part of Broward County. The original town site included most of modern-day Deerland with only small pieces remaining today including portions of Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale proper. At that time deer were an important part of local life due to their high level of nutrition which came free from cornucopia levels found near crops such as rice and cotton fields that had been developed nearby since before recorded history even began! After years during which no one hunted deer anymore because they had become so numerousdue to humans hunting game all over South America – hunters brought deer back into production along with other animals like pigs which did not occur until after European contact! A few decades later these same people would find themselves again struggling with how to feed everyone coming through their front door! The initial settlers had difficulty finding enough land to build homes on so they leased some parcels from Native American leaders under the condition that they soon provide more land for development than anyone could ever hope to receive! This happened mainly around upper Co Rd 95 & Uptown Drive (now US Hwy 441) where heavy industry started developing rapidly such as citrus processing plants using lime juice extracted from trees grown thereabouts! Streets like Main Street & US Hwy 441 quickly turned into thoroughfares fullof carshops druggies & prostitutes; businesses open late serving residents until well past midnight – services unavailable during daylight hours thanks largelyto Prohibition era regulations against alcohol being sold at retail outlets prior to 1933 – prohibiting sales within 200 feet either side main street!! There wasn’t much else going on besides this continuous nightlife except for emergencies caused by natural disasters like hurricanes etc… things slowly changed starting around 1960 when developers realized how valuable it would be have an established community center/park within walking distance especially given its close proximity to Interstate 95 & Miami International Airport!!! That’s when everything really began To change For Deerland as we know it today: A big ol’ Community Center/Park was born!!!
