De Land is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,779 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. De Land is located on U.S Route 2 exit 191A and has a post office with ZIP code 32836. The first settler in De Land was John Crouse who arrived in 1821 from Connecticut. He named his land "Crete" after his home country of Crete. A store and hotel were built on what is now Main Street in 1827 by Jno Blythe, one of the original investors in Citrus County's early growth as an agricultural community. In 1828, DeLand became county seat when Kissimmee was incorporated as a town and it remained so until 1911 when it became part of Orlando proper. In 1925, DeLand's first high school opened; it would be renamed Central High School in 1965 when it merged with nearby Orange Lake Junior Senior High School to form Central/Orlando High School (now USMLEX). In 1932, citrus trade began to grow rapidly due to the Great Depression and residents voted to incorporate as a city within theirown county government; this would later become known as City Hall Square (). The city annexed portions of unincorporated Citrus County between 1934 and 1941 which added another , making total annexation to de Land up to . On October 14, 1961 the last vestige of downtown – dating back to 1927 – burned down during Hurricane Forster while people were inside their homes for evacuation; this destroyed much historical evidence about downtown De Lands history dating back before that date including many business records and letters from then-Mayor Hagan hayes (). In 1907 the town received its own telephone system when it became a part of Lake County; this service continued until 1957 when it was transferred to St Petersburg proper under then-Governor Bob Taft’s bill to create metropolitan areas throughout Florida. In 1925, ownership of Eglin Island passed from the United States Military to the state government through an agreement between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Governor Talbot Jameson; this led to much development on Eglin with construction of public housing developments such as Bayfront Park (1927), US Coast Guard Station Fort Harrison (1929), US Navy Yard Mobile (1930), State Fairgrounds (1932), and White Sands Missile Range (1945). The area today known as DeLand came into being with all these activities when land totaling just over two square miles were purchased from Captain John Hance for $2,000 plus expenses incurred in surveys conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Pogue Smithson on behalf of the county commissioners Upon purchase there were only 15 residents living on site who soon erected several buildings: a storehouse/office complex including a post office/ Mechanicsburg Hotel which served as both home court house and jail; an athletic field which served as village center while also hosting dances or other events; two churches – First Baptist Church completed in 1928 and Christ Episcopal Church completed in 1934 – additional homes were built but not used because of World War II shortages; original Main Street ran north–south bisecting present day Third Avenue with Second Avenue running east–west across main street; although traffic congestion resulted from many businesses located along Third Avenue motorists found no alternative but to use Second Avenue for traveling southbound except for local services available off Third Avenue such as pharmacists’ shops which took patients directly to their physicians' offices instead of going down Third avenue After World War II ended most functions associated with military life moved ashore including barracks, stores, mess hall etc., leaving little evidence remaining Of early days When locals gathered near storehouse For entertainment They would sound cowbell To get attention From Militia Officers guarding fort All activity stopped After hours
