De Land, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–West Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The United States Postal Service Code for De Land is 32609. The town was founded in 1892 by J.C. DeLand and his wife Anna Gaines DeLand as a post office on the corner of Old US-4 and FM 727 (now Muskogee Road). The first postmaster was A.W. Lambert who served from April 9, 1892 to October 15, 1893; Wm Ladd who served from November 15, 1893 to May 13, 1895; Fayette Senter who served from June 25, 1895 to October 11, 1897; Geo Pritchard who served from November 3rd until his death on December 5th 1898; James McGillivray who served fromJanuary 6th until February 12th 1899; Rufus Hogue serving until he resigned January 2nd 1901 citing health reasons and Nellie Bigham taking over effective January 3rd 1901 In 1902 the name of the town changed to De Land after J.C., Cdr USNR's wife Anna Gaines (1862-1926) married Capt John Eland (1857-1928), son of General Wade Eland and Julia Ann Frazier Eland in 1905 when they were both stationed at Fort Pickens South Carolina while her father commanded that station during World War I . Captain Eland had also been appointed Postmaster on September 20th 1880 at Stillwater Springs AK when that place became an unincorporated community following its incorporation into what would become Polk County in 1881 as part of Creek Nation west of Lake Motorsburg where he had resided since 1868 . After one year as Postmaster at Stillwater Springs which included three months during prohibition times due to lack of mail service within the territory then made up by Florida and Georgia it reverted back to Knoxville with new stamps issued on May 16th 1881st under orders from Territorial Governor James Kenedy . As Knoxville grew larger receiving its own mail route via Montgomery Avenue eastward there began occasional skirmishes between Knoxville residents over access rights along this newly developing street grid with resultant arrests etc but these did not last long asCaptainEland quickly intervened ordering a stop à la Mitchum cvd thenceforth known simply as "The Strip" or "Old Street". He continued this policy until his retirement effective December 15 th 1904 having grown tired of daily confrontations with rowdy Knoxvillians near his home thereby creating what would eventually come to be called "The Swamp" behind his property line adjacent today's Medical University campus across Old State Road #32609 On July 4 th 1898 Jno Hogue Sr died suddenly leaving two children aged 10 & 8 years old John & Yvonne independently caring for their mother & younger sister Gertrude living with their maternal grandparents Mrs Jane Rankin (née McGee) & Rev Dr Harry Rankin before being sent east for school Preacher Cook lived with them briefly before moving back east soon after joining family later that year Elder Parkhurst moved out early in 1899 after joining Presbyterian Church vowing never again to leave home without taking cartons full either inside or outside - life wasn't easy growing up those days especially if you didn't have proper shoes Elder Parkhurst left behind a lasting memory of singing “So Long As I Live” right outside house door services were held every other Saturday morning starting about 1930 usually ending around 4 pm inside church building prior to services beginning inside First Baptist Church right next door

DeLand, Florida was founded in 1836 by John De Land and his wife Martha. The town was named after the Deland Islands in Denmark, which are located in the Baltic Sea. The name came from a property sale where De Land listed two land parcels as "De Land" and "Anna Land". In 1839, the De Lands moved to Tallahassee, Florida and started a cotton plantation. John DeLand died in 1848 and Martha took over management of the plantation. The couple had six children: three sons who became farmers, one daughter who married a doctor, and one son who became an attorney. When America entered World War I in 1917, the family evacuated to Quincy Beach on Jupiter Island because they believed that Tallahassee would be bombed if they stayed in Florida. They returned to Tallahassee after the war ended but continued to manage their cotton plantation until their death in 1925. In 1922, Georgia O'Keeffe lived for five months at her grandparents house on Palm Beach Boulevard near Belle Glade before moving into her own home there two years later. She later said about her time living with them: "I remember being very much influenced by my grandfather's example of hard work and self-reliance." John O'Keefe Sr., Martha's father also ran a small ranch near Belle Glade where he raised horses and cattle while his daughters did all kinds of domestic chores. After Martha's death in 1928, John Jr., took over management of the ranch until his death in 1942; then it passed through female lines until it was acquired by Don Hodges (1962) and is currently operated by his granddaughter Rachael Hodges (2002). Although only about 10 miles long,[1] Volusia County is considered part of today’s Jacksonville metropolitan area due largely to its location within easy commuting distance of both Tallahassee[2] and Daytona Beach.[3] The county seat at Jacksonville was first established as Mira Mesa on May 3rd,[4] following George Washington Pemberton’s purchase of 1/5th share—later renamed Old Mira Mesa—in what is now known as Town Square on November 2nd, 1784 from Juan Rodriguez de Escobar y Florido alias Gaspard de Fleury[5]. On November 12th 1785 Pemberton sold this land comprising present day Volusia County to James Robertson for $135 ($8 per acre).[6][7] This transaction increased settlement along what is now Fourth Street southward from Fort Myers Roads running parallel thereto between Plantation Fields eastward towards Indian Harbour Company Lands westward thence current Third Street thence up Fourth Street past Church Streets lying athwart Heidelberg Road considerable stock having been added since last donation hereinabout….The reason for such extensive improvements along this line appears to have been principally traffic concerns arising out of trade with SpanishFlorida…. By 1800 there were more than 1400 white people living scattered among numerous Seminole Indians inhabiting various parts ot Pensacola Bayou & adjacent Creek bottoms bordering Mobile Bayou… lands grant included…..In 1840 James Robertson donated 40 acres extending northwest from Indian Harbour Company Lands southwestwards along Third Street towards Plantation Fields eastward thitherto Current Third Street thence up Fourth Street past Church Streets lying athwart Heidelberg Road considerable stock having been added since last donation hereinabove…..Robertson left ownership interest behind when he conveyed 80 acres including present day Volusia County [] to Uriah Hantzell for $175 per acre [on July 5th 1841]; Hantzell conveyed title back again [] September 25th 1840….Hantzell further donated 50 additional acres adjoining those owned by Uriah Hantzell on October 20th 1840 consisting mainly consisted mostly Riverbottom Sound country drained by several creeks including Tharascoggins Creek & Coffee Key creek etc bounded WNW Corner Of First Block South & Second Block East Boundary OF Sugar Pine Shores Residual Estate Today’s modern day boundaries were set down circa 1880 when Uriah Hantzell sold Lots Nos 4 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 upon presentation thereof To Samuel Merrill Esqr……Estate boundaries remain unchanged even though development has occurred around it…..Miramar Placee developed early around here likely because General William Moultrie used it as headquarters during visits hereabouts during Seminole Indian Wars.. . . . . .
