De Land, Florida is a small town in Panhandle County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. Highway 17 north of Tallahassee and south of St Cloud. De Land has one school, DeLand Elementary School which serves students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade; two churches - First Baptist Church and Second Presbyterian Church - both with fulltime pastors; a post office which opened in 1892; and two businesses - Jakes Hardware and Easley's Grocery. The first European settlers in what is now De Land were Spanish colonists from Cuba who landed in 1559 on what is now the east side of Panhandle County. They named the area "Xalapa" after their captain general Xámara de las Casas who had visited the area earlier that year while exploring this part of Florida for Spain. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson Purchased 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land between the panhandles on the Gulf Coast and present day Tallahassee to form Alachua County. On July 6, 1815 he issued a proclamation creating De Land as Panhandle County by organizing its citizens into companies known as brigades under command of Captain John Prentice US Army during his military expedition against Seminole Indians near Pensacola Beachhead on July 4th (the “Battle of Pensacola”). A post office called "DeLand" was established at this location on November 5th, 1892 under mail order from Jacksonville via Canada Post with Josephine Bicknell serving as sender/receiver until her death in 1935 The first store built here was Jakes Hardware located halfway down Main Street opposite First Baptist Church . It was started by James Aiken Jr., son of James Aiken Sr., who later became Mayor Of Tallahassee In 1930s there were two other stores open: Easley's Grocery next door to First Baptist Church also operated by Mr & Mrs Easley until 1941 when it closed due to racial discrimination against blacks which continued through most all businesses during that time period

De Land, Florida was founded in 1834 by James DeLand and wife Anna Maria. It is now a city in Broward County, Florida. The De Land plantation was located on the banks of the River Letcher in central De Land. James and Anna Maria were both born in1793 in what is now eastern Kentucky. They first settled in Misaki Township, Alachua County,Florida, but soon moved to DeLand where they owned over 300 acres (1 km2). In 1834 they erected a log cabin on their plantation which served as their home for the next 50 years. James died at age 82 in 1868 andAnnaMaria passed away at age 84 in 1916. Their son John Fenton DeLand took over the family business and ran it until his death in 1926.
