De Land is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Jacksonville on State Road 8. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,463. The name De Land is thought to come from a Seminole word meaning "The Place of the Deer". The first European settlement in what is now DeLand was a hacienda owned by José Escobar and his wife María del Carmen Castillo in 1824. They named their land after Don Carlos de Leyva y Costilla who had granted them Rancho San Vicente de la Vega near Tampa Bay. A year later, Escobar sold his interest in the rancho to José Antonio Pensilvano and Alonso Blanco for 850 acres (30 ha). In 1830, Pensilvano founded Tampa Bay's first town and named it St. Petersburg; however, this name was never approved by the Spanish government and it reverted back to De Land after Pensilvano's death in 1835. In 1846, following Florida'sBecomingAUSSReedition Act of 1845 which allowed Negroes to vote., two African American men--John Moseley and William Wells--filed a lawsuit against Pensilvano seeking $5 per day for each male slave they owned as damages for racial discrimination. After three years of litigation, including an appearance before U.S. District Court judge James Cranchiger presiding over one of the most serious cases involving white vs black racism then extant within American jurisprudence, Moseley & Wells were successful in achieving their goal with an injunction ordering Pensilvano to pay them $10 per day plus costs until they received payment from his slaves or until he abandoned them voluntarily. At that point all but one of Pensilvanos' slaves would have become free according to territorial law at that time mulattoes were not considered citizens under Mexican rule although they theoretically constituted a single social group with common rights and privileges under Mexican law subject only to individual legal control by their owner.. Pensilvanos abandoned several hundred slaves during this period because he could not afford to continue paying them wages or purchasing new ones; however some continued working on his property until 1840 when he gave all but five away as part of an effort by him andhispanic partners Juan Ponce de León and Hernando Cortés Tochárezto purchase more land adjacent to where DeLand now stands from Juan Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdez who had acquired portions thereof from Pedro Menéndez de Avila shortly before transmitting it along with other lands ceded thereto by Spain at Dolores Point Treaty on October 26th , 1565 . In 1861 local papers announced plans for annexation by Jacksonville creating new municipal boundaries including parts of Monroe County west of US-1 stretching downriver into St Johns County also included herein were sections lying southward beyond present day Orange Park on Indian River just north Duval County line thence easterly through Live Oak Swamp into what is now Nassau County .. During Reconstruction era much progress has been made hereabouts - jobs have been created for many - people are coming back home - schools are open - churches -- Mass Ave Chapel has reopened!
