In 1565, Captain Don Diego de Montoya y Noriega sent out an expedition to explore this new land which he called Terra Nova or New World because he had not seen any such place since his return from Asia four years earlier. His party reached Caracol Real shortly thereafter but did not stay long because they were met with hostile Indians and soon returned home without discovering anything else significant about this new land. Spanish colonists began arriving in large numbers throughout much of Southeast Florida between 1663 and 1686 due to high demand for labor in sugar cane plantations and other economic endeavors statewide at that time. Many Spaniards also came overland through Georgia across the Apalachicola Mountains into Florida because there were no shipping lanes available along the Gulf Coast from Mexico City inland to Tampa/Orlando or eastward to Miami/Fort Lauderdale beyond Port Charlotte where goods could be unloaded onto boats coming northshore then transported downriver back upriver before being loaded onto ships again taking them all the way back to Mexico City! It wasn’t until after experiencing harsh conditions living off subsistence farming near Tampa Bay while serving as governor general under Admiral Antonio López Menéndez that many settlers began complaining about their lack of food options within Hispaniola (thethen Presidio and later San Francisco) so they decided to head west instead hoping for better prospects closer to Havana/Mexico City where they could find passage on vessels going southbound across Texas or even California! Most settlements reported only brief visits from Europeans before fleeing again when faced with hostility or starvation; however one group – led by Ensign Nicholas Roque – stayed behind for more than three months exploring what became known as “Isla Vella” (Island Brethren) Island located just below present-day Jacksonville Landing on St Johns River which Roque deemed “the most beautiful spot upon earth” according to one account! After hearing reports from Roque concerning rich natural resources hereabouts including coal seams worth $3 million per ton (!), Governor Manuel Miranda created a two-member commission chaired by Judge Antonio Higueras Montero consisting primarily of Englishmen John Hawkins and Arthur Phillip among others authorized “to search diligently for all valuable mines within these limits”!! At first blush this seems like more than just another exploratory mission; however if one looks more closely at Montero’s agenda it becomes clear why this commission was set up in order allow Protestant exploration companies some control over what minerals might be discovered close enough so they didn't have exclusive rights sold out by Catholic monopoly interests!!! Even today mining operations are conducted using techniques similar those employed during Spanish colonial times including underground mining using watercourts kept open year-round!), forced migration etc., making De Land one very active town during its early days!!!
