De Land is a small, rural town in southern Florida. It is located on the Apalachicola River and has a population of around 1,500. She named her new land De Land after her maternal grandfather's home country - Denmark. This purchase marked the beginning of continuous white settlement within present-day Escambia County. A post office called DeLand was established in 1827 and remained open until 1909; its last letter was KG. In 1902, two brothers by the name of Ewing built a mill on Haines Creek which later became known as Ewing's Mill; this mill operated until 1904 when it burned down due to waterlogging caused by heavy rains that year. The town site that remains today at mile marker 6 Road on Highway 231 dates back to this earlier milling period and is commonly referred to as "Ewingtown". De Land, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Orange County, Florida. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The name De Land comes from the Seminole word "taland," meaning "place of the Talians." The first European to visit De Land was José María Villalobos on December 9, 1795. He and his party were exploring the area for mineral resources when they discovered the land now known as DeLand. On July 14, 1819, John McKinney arrived in DeLand with his horse and wagon and named it after himself - McKinney Landing. In 1833, Captain James Fenton established a ferryboat service between Hernando County and De Land. By 1840, there were 40 ferryboats operating within Orange County. By 1860, there were over 100 vessels running through De Land Ferry Company! In 1865-66, William Troup built a warehouse at 324 S Main Street which served as the town's first schoolhouse. A Methodist church was built in 1876 and became active in serving the community until it burned down in 1922; however its stone foundation still stands today at State Road 527 across from the present day Pompano Beach High School (now called Pompano Beach North). From 1865-1966 to 1967-1968 and 1969-1970; Pompano Beach post office operated out of one of these warehouses! In 1933–1934 Hurricane Charley caused extensive damage to much of east Tampa Bay including parts of DeLand where water levels had topped 90 feet (30 meters). The town lost all its businesses except important ones such as shipbuilding yards that reopened quickly due to their skilled labor shortage elsewhere during this difficult time period. Many homes were destroyed or damaged by both high winds gusts up to 150 mph (240 km/h) as well as floods that inundated many neighborhoods near waterways which created inland channels estimated at more than 20 feet (6 meters) deep! Many residents rebuilt within weeks or months although some chose not to return because they felt their losses would be too great had their homes been destroyed or left unusable again like so many others had experienced before during prior hurricanes! The original bridge over Suwannee River also collapsed shortly after being built causing inconvenience for motorists trying to crossriver using it while also leading directly to flooding downstream!. Work began immediately on a new bridge but only completed portions of it before further damage caused by another storm produced an even longer closure!! Ultimately $5 million was spent rebuilding bridges statewide resulting in increased travel time for drivers affected by Irma & Andrew plus other improvements statewide such as better drainage systems etc.? These days most visitors coming through De Land are descendants or descendants’of those who first visited here back then!!
