De Land is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Coral Gables Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up De Land was originally owned by the Seminole tribe. In 1837, Captain James A. Wilkinson purchased it from the Seminoles for $4,000 cash. Wilkinson renamed it "Wilkinson's Landing." He used the landing to supply goods and passengers to Key West before starting his own store there in 1841. In 1846, Wilkinson married Julia Caterer and they started a family; Julia became pregnant and gave birth to their first child in DeLand on November 8th of that year. They would have another child in 1849 but he died shortly thereafter due to yellow fever while traveling through Cuba with his business partners John Bogue and Edmund Sisson; Julia would give birth to their second child some time later on December 3rd in Key West. Captain James A. Wilkinson Jr.'s Store continued doing business until 1861 when it burned down due to a storm caused by Hurricane Andrew: insurance companies refused to write policies because of this event which greatly damaged downtown DeLand; however, Captain Wilkinson's son James A., who ran the store for his father until 1865 still had claims against some of those damages so he reopened the store under new ownership less than two months afterAndrew hit DeLandugnstructionally total destruction...This new incarnation of Captain James A.'s Store operated successfully until about 1895 when fire destroyed most of the building including all its contents...Today only remnants remain from one of Jacksonville's earliest commercial enterprises - an unassuming brick building located just off US-1 which once housed one of Jacksonville's earliest grocery stores...It should be noted that this brick structure served as not only home but also office for many years services provided by people such as JACOBSON HENRY (1881-1966), who lived upstairs along with his wife Lillie Mae and three children CHESTER WILLIAMS (1901-1968), JOHN WILLIAMSON (1920-2006) AND CHRISTINE DAVIS (born 1958)... Today much has changed since those early days - although Jaxon Henry still resides upstairs - much like our community today!
