A post office called De Land was established at Kenedy Landing on October 6, 1868, and remained in operation until May 22, 1901; it was replaced by an adjacent post office named Jacksonville proper which opened November 12, 1898. In 1861-1862 Confederate forces under Colonel Edward Pemberton invaded Florida using northeast Alabama territory as their springboard into Florida Superior Territory east of Tampa Bay for attack on Union Supply Depot at Mobile Bay; they failed to take any significant towns or important installations before withdrawing back into Alabama Province January 1865 following Union successes at Petersburg and Gettysburg over similar campaigns in Virginia and North Carolina respectively On April 10th 1861 Confederate Major Edwin Stoneman surrendered Camp Butler southeast of Tampa Bay to elements of Brigadier General David Hunter’s brigade led by Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Ewing with commandant Colored Troops Colored Troops First Division Second Brigade Third Regiment Alabama Infantry Volunteers Corps Militia Infantry First Battalion Light Artillery regiment Second Battalion Flagstaff Rifle company Captain John Hance commanding Thereafter Union troops burned all but one building within Decatur county including Decatur arsenal where supplies were stored along with cannon captured from Confederate forces capitulating there that same day - marking end of hostilities between Confederate States Of America And The United States Of America Reconstruction followed with Democrats taking control while Confederates continued to exist as a separate entity known as the “Florida Department” until finally being abolished by President Andrew Johnson in 1869 effective January 1st 1870 . As such De Land became part of new Jackson County . On November 9th 1907 hardware store owner James Waugh filed suit against Polk CoRecorder & Tax Collector Milton Ladd alleging illegally tax collecting activities within his store although court ruled no contest & case dismissed without prejudice This event marked beginning of end for oldJacksonCoRecorder&Tax Collector rivalry which would last thru most portionof 20th century
