De Land, Florida is a small town located in Collier County, Florida. The population was 9,719 at the 2000 census and it grew to 12,613 by 2010. De Land is located on the shores of Lake Okeechobee and is known for its citrus crops, high-end shopping malls, and beaches. The area that now includes De Land was first inhabited by Seminoles who were forced out of their land in 1836. The area was first surveyed in 1840 as part of the boundary between Miami and Fort Myers. In 1845 the area became part of Indian Territory and was named for General James O'Hara DeLand who had won a victory over Seminole forces at Bayonet Point near modern day Tallahassee. In 1868 the US Congress created Collier County from parts of three other counties - Brevard (northwest), Polk (southwest) and St Lucie (southeast). As per Article XVIII(2) of the US Constitution, each county has "a district or election district" which "shall be reckoned among his constituents." As a result of this provision, De Land voted on March 3rd 1870 to become part of Collier County rather than voting with Miami or Fort Myers which would have given it to either tribe. The only store in town opened in 1907 when J C White opened up his white grocery store at what is now Main Street/U S 1 exit 113A. At that time there were no roads into town so shoppers walked across the lake to get to their stores. The first Walmart opened up in 2002 just northeast of downtown on State Road 436A east of I-75 south then shuttle services took people directly into town from there until they moved out around 2006 when they built a new store next door on Highways 95South & 435 West which continues Shuttle service today into early morning hours

De Land, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by Englishman John White in 1838 as DeLand Plantation on the east side of St. Johns River. The name "De Land" means "place of landing." White's plantation grew to encompass over 6 square miles (15 km2) and had a population of about 400 people when it was sold to Andrew Mellon in 1845. After Mellon's death in 1866, the land passed through several hands until it was purchased by Major General A. P. Hill in 1906 and developed into an agricultural community with a post office, school and hospital. In 1934 De Land became an incorporated municipality under state law; its first mayor was Ethel Mosely Woodruff-Harding. In 1968 annexation of neighboring towns placed De Land within Jacksonville proper; however, this annexation has been rescinded multiple times because Jackson City officials felt that De Land did not have enough economic development potential outside of Jacksonville proper
In 1868, the De Land family arrived in Florida from New York. The father, John De Land, had been a fur trader and surveyor in what is now Canada. He started a farm on the present-day corner of DeLand and Congress Streets in Gainesville, which he named "De Land's Farm." In 1876, John and his wife Lillie founded Gainesville Female Seminary. In 1877, they bought an acreage on what is now University Boulevard to house their school. The couple also donated land to the city of Gainesville for its first public library. In the early 20th century, John De Land was active in politics as a Democrat. He served as mayor of Gainesville from 1916 to 1918 and as state senator from 1923 to 1927. From 1931 until his death in 1938, he was chairman of the City Council. The John and Lillie De Lands are buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Gainesville
