De Land is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The first residents of De Land were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1763. They named their town after the Danish island of Zealand (later renamed Florida). In 1821, General James A. Kenedy and his Confederate forces occupied De Land during the Seminole War and burned it to the ground; this event is commemorated by a statue located near downtown that depicts General Kenedy burning down De Land. In 1892, DeLand became a U.S. post office with Jerald Peele as its firstpostmaster. In 1907, citrus growers organized the Florida Citrus Growers Association which changed its name to the Florida Citrus Marketing Board in 1912; from then on until 1959, DeLand had separate marketing boards for oranges and grapes/fruit deliveries In 1960, voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Kissimmee into Osceola County; this annexation led to growth in tourism and job creation for local businesses The community has experienced steady growth over time - from 2 square miles in 1960 to more than 7 square miles today - due to its location within Orange County's sprawling metropolis and easy access to major highways

In the early 1800s, De Land was a small town in Florida. It was located on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles south of Jacksonville and about 60 miles north of Tampa. The town was founded by English colonists in 1763 and at its peak had a population of around 1,000 people. It declined after the British withdrew from Florida in 1813 and the U.S. took over the state. In 1821, De Land became part of Jacksonville and went through various changes until it merged with other nearby towns in 1925 to become Palm Beach County.
