De Land, Florida is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,488 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white child in De Land was John Hargrave on July 1, 1836. The town was founded by J.D. Roe and Wm. Fenton in 1892 as Plantation No. 2 on what is nowCollier Boulevard east of US-1 and north of US-27/29W (the present day DeLand Parkway). In 1907 it moved to its current location on a tract of land that had been donated by Colman Gibbs to the town for use as a parkland and school district; it also included parts of what are now Beachwood Village and Belle Isle neighborhoods on Collier Boulevard north of I-95A/US-27E (Interstate 95) De Land's economy has traditionally been based upon agriculture with some light manufacturing since the early days when most people were farmers or fishermen. When World War II began there were two main types of firearms Hats: Commando type which had an orange band around the crown and "Pilot Officer" type which had no band but had a webbed strap across the forehead over left eye slit where pilot glasses would go(Pilot Officers only). A few Commando type types also featured Service patches on chest area like RAF pilots did during WWII . In 1942 new regulations changed Commandos into Riflemen effective 1st July 1943 so any helmets not meeting these requirements would be confiscated along with any clothing they possessed including firearms! This led very soon to some really funny letters being sent home from servicemen who couldn't find what they were looking for! So much confusion ensued that most retailers got out of business! After WW2 ended things slowly reverted back to normal butchers' hats being worn instead of firearms hats until 1957 when new regulations came into effect banning allHelmets without a brimless safety device known as "buzzcocks". This caused quite some consternation as many servicemen still wore their old Commander type hats even though they weren't safe! However, within 6 months most retailers had adapted themselves to this change too so everything should now be conformable ! De Land, Florida (now part of Tallahassee) was first reported by the Spanish in 1565 as Landa. The name is derived from a figure of speech which means "to wander." In 1763, when Spain ceded Florida to Britain, the land became known as La Florida. In 1821, after Seminole Indians killed several white settlers near Fort Gaines in DeLand, Florida, the area was acquired by the United States and named for General Andrew Jackson. The town of Jacksonville was founded on what is now Bay Street in 1824. Jacksonville's growth accelerated during the antebellum period because it became a transportation hub connecting Tampa with Jacksonville and other points east. American plantations were established here after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. The population reached some 10,000 by 1830 and more than 20,000 by 1840. However, during slavery times many Africans were brought to this area as slaves and their descendants continue to reside here today. After emancipation began in 1865, many African Americans moved into this area because freedmen wanted large parcels of land that could be used for farming or development purposes rather than being given to white families who had owned them before emancipation. As this happened many African Americans lost their ownership of property but continued to reside here until 1970 when they were all removed from DeLand through legislation passed by Congress under President Ulysses S. Grant
On December 12, 1915, the De Land area was annexed by the City of Miami. On February 6, 1926, the annexation of Miami to Broward County caused a great deal of controversy. The original city boundaries were 1st Street on the east side of Miami Beach and Key Biscayne Boulevard on the west side. However, after Broward County was formed in 1928, it extended eastward to include part of Fort Lauderdale and northward to include part of West Palm Beach. In 1934, both Broward County and Miami-Dade County were created from portions ofMiami-Dade County. In 1947, much development took place in De Land when Federal Aviation Administration rules allowed for subdivision within limits established by local governments. This led to increased population growth in De Land which at one point reached 575 residents; however this number has since decreased due to competition from other developments in the area such as Suncoast Airport and Everglades Park
