De Land is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Carrabelle, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent inhabitants of De Land were Creek Indians who had been living there for centuries before European settlement began. In 1821, Governor Andrew Jackson sent an expedition to find and scalp local Creeks for bounty reasons.subsequently named for General James DeLand (1784-1856), commander of the United States Army's First Brigade during the Seminole War (1835-1838). Colonel John Sledge explored and discovered Mobile Bay in 1814 while exploring Florida; he thought it might be a place where great herds of elephants could be found and so named it after him. The town was founded on October 14, 1836 by Captains Robert Fenton and Augustus Bickerton as Fort Moseby on land they donated to the government after their victory over Spanish forces at Naval Battle of Mobile Bay on August 12, 1836. In 1840 De Land was incorporated as a village under the name "New Port". It changed its name to "De Land" in honor of General James DeLand on January 1, 1850 when he became military governor of all Florida with jurisdiction over Escambia County except St Petersburg which was then part of Hillsborough County. On November 15, 1860 De Land lost its charter as a village due to lack of support from residents but regained it three years later when Escambia County was created from parts of Hillsborough and Marion Counties. The first post office opened in December 1861 (the yearEscambiaCountywasorganized). By 1870 the population had grown sufficiently that it moved into its own building located at 4th Street near Gulf Boulevard until annexation by Pensacola in 1907 caused another move into what is now downtown Pensacola; this time many homes were built along Pecan Drive which ran through present day downtown Pensacola from almost south east corner to almost north west corner just past Third Street which served as its main business district until 1950 when Interstate 10 bypassed downtown Pensacola en route to Tallahassee making Downtown Pensacola essentially an inner city area filled with high rise buildings designed for people working in Tallahassee rather than those living near or visiting them outside their work hours

They first developed land around a small town they named "New Port Richey", which was later moved to its current location. In 1878, the De Land family built the first house in what is nowDeLand. By 1900, the De Lands had developed over 2,000 acres of land in what is nowDeLand.
